Sylvia Brownrigg's newest novel, Morality Tale, is an analysis of a modern marriage. She has written four other works of fiction, including the New York Times Notable Book 'The Metaphysical Touch' and the Lambda Award-winning 'Pages for You.' First, students will read and analyze NPR's interview with Dr. Frances Jensen, "Why Teens are Impulsive, Addition-Prone And Should Protect Their Brains."Students will then compare and contrast this reading with the article they previously read, "Teenage Brain." Students applied the ideas conveyed in "Teenage Brain" to Romeo and Juliet's rash actions in Shakespeare's play, Romeo and Juliet.Lastly, students will practice using context clues to decipher word meaning and consult a dictionary to verify the accuracy.

The African Storybook (ASb) is a literacy initiative that provides openly licensed picture storybooks for early reading in the languages of Africa. Developed and hosted by Saide, the ASb has an interactive website that enables users to read, create, download, translate, and adapt stories. The initiative addresses the dire shortage of children’s storybooks in African languages, crucial for children’s literacy development.

Module 1 embodies critical changes in Geometry as outlined by the Common Core. The heart of the module is the study of transformations and the role transformations play in defining congruence. The topic of transformations is introduced in a primarily experiential manner in Grade 8 and is formalized in Grade 10 with the use of precise language. The need for clear use of language is emphasized through vocabulary, the process of writing steps to perform constructions, and ultimately as part of the proof-writing process.

In this lesson, students will read an excerpt of an interview given by Mary McLeod Bethune and will learn that she founded the Daytona National and Industrial School for Negro Girls (now Bethune-Cookman College) in 1904. Through close reading, they will explore and discuss connections between events from Bethune’s life experiences and their own lives, and connections between past and current events.
This assignment exposes students to racial inequalities in their own communities and helps them to identify the impact of racial segregation on quality of life. The big ideas in this assignment are racial inequality, residential segregation, and environmental justice.

This activity asks students to read two primary sources about the Middle Passage, one written by Olaudah Equiano and one by John Barbot, and consider the bias in their narratives. Discussion questions are meant to encourage a close reading and interrogation of the two historical sources. The resource helps students think critically about primary sources and the production of history.
