DH Lawrence: A Postcolonial Writer?

Professor Peter McDonald draws on the work of Indian novelist and literary critic, Amit Chaudhuri, to open up new ways of how we can think about D.H. Lawrence, not only as a Modernist, but also as a Post/Colonial writer. Peter then turns to Lawrence's short story, 'The Woman Who Rode Away' (1924), set in rural Mexico, in order to demonstrate how his literature runs against the grain of distinctly Western modes of thought. This audio recording is part the Interviews on Great Writers series presented by Oxford University Podcasts.

Your body is made of cells -- but how does a single cell know to become part of your nose, instead of your toes? The answer is in your body's instruction book: DNA. Joe Hanson compares DNA to detailed manual for building a person out of cells -- with 46 chapters (chromosomes) and hundreds of thousands of pages covering every part of you.

What's so special about Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man? With arms outstretched, the man fills the irreconcilable spaces of a circle and a square -- symbolizing the Renaissance-era belief in the mutable nature of humankind. James Earle explains the geometric, religious and philosophical significance of this deceptively simple drawing.

Today's math curriculum is teaching students to expect -- and excel at -- paint-by-numbers classwork, robbing kids of a skill more important than solving problems: formulating them. In his talk, Dan Meyer shows classroom-tested math exercises that prompt students to stop and think. (Filmed at TEDxNYED.)

Dante in Translation

The course is an introduction to Dante and his cultural milieu through a critical reading of the Divine Comedy and selected minor works (Vita nuova, Convivio, De vulgari eloquentia, Epistle to Cangrande). An analysis of Dante's autobiography, the Vita nuova, establishes the poetic and political circumstances of the Comedy's composition. Readings of Inferno, Purgatory and Paradise seek to situate Dante's work within the intellectual and social context of the late Middle Ages, with special attention paid to political, philosophical and theological concerns. Topics in the Divine Comedy explored over the course of the semester include the relationship between ethics and aesthetics; love and knowledge; and exile and history.

The A2DataDive assembled representatives from nonprofit organizations, U-M statistics and data sciences departments, and members of the community to collectively address the data analysis and visualization needs for area nonprofits and local organizations. Open.Michigan was one of the organizers of the A2DataDive, and worked with two School of Information graduate students to scope and implement the event. After identifying two organizations who had data needs:ŰÖFocus HopeŰÖand theŰÖAfrican Health OER Network, this joint community/university datadive took place over a weekend in February 2012 in North Quads space 2435, an adaptable space especially suited to collaborative, participatory work. The A2DataDive was a successful proof-of-concept for a joint collaboration between an academic institution and local organizations and businesses, and demonstrated that sharing skills and expertise to address a need is also a great way to help others.
