Student groups are provided with a generic car base on which to design a device/enclosure to protect an egg on or in the car as it rolls down a ramp at increasing slopes. During this in-depth physics/science/technology activity, student teams design, build and test their creations to meet the design challenge, and are expected to perform basic mathematical calculations using collected data, including a summative cost to benefit ratio.

Students use a compass and a permanent magnet to trace the magnetic field lines produced by the magnet. By positioning the compass in enough spots around the magnet, the overall magnet field will be evident from the collection of arrows representing the direction of the compass needle. This Super Lesson utilizes Project Based Learning to assist learners with designing, building, and testing flying contraptions as an introduction to Engineering. The goal of this project is to engage students in collaborative team work and to introduce students to the Science and Engineering Practices: Asking Questions and Defining Problems, Planning and Carrying Out Investigations, and Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions.

We have offered this Super Lesson as an 8-week elective course, developing and strengthening student interest in applied Math and Science topics. It could also be offered within upper elementary or middle school Science and Math courses. In addition, each week’s topic could be used as a stand alone mini-lesson if time is limited. We have worked to include multiple options within this unit to make it accessible to both general education and special education programs, including recommendations for modifications and extensions.

Dyscalculia: Characteristics, Causes and Treatments

Developmental Dyscalculia (DD) is a learning disorder affecting the ability to acquire school-level
arithmetic skills, affecting approximately 3-6% of individuals. Progress in understanding the root causes
of DD and how best to treat it have been impeded by lack of widespread research and variation in
characterizations of the disorder across studies. However, recent years have witnessed significant growth
in the field, and a growing body of behavioral and neuroimaging evidence now points to an underlying
deficit in the representation and processing of numerical magnitude information as a potential core
deficit in DD. An additional product of the recent progress in understanding DD is the resurgence of a
distinction between ‘primary’ and ‘secondary’ developmental dyscalculia. The first appears related to
impaired development of brain mechanisms for processing numerical magnitude information, while the
latter refers to mathematical deficits stemming from external factors such as poor teaching, low socioeconomic status, and behavioral attention problems or domain-general cognitive deficits. Increased
awareness of this distinction going forward, in combination with longitudinal empirical research, offers
great potential for deepening our understanding of the disorder and developing effective educational
interventions.

Students further their understanding of the engineering design process (EDP) while applying researched information on transportation technology, materials science and bioengineering. Students are given a fictional client statement (engineering challenge) and directed to follow the steps of the EDP to design prototype patient safety systems for small-size model ambulances. While following the steps of the EDP, students identify suitable materials and demonstrate two methods of representing solutions to the design challenge (scale drawings and small-scale prototypes). A successful patient safety system meets all of the project's functions and constraints, including the model patient (a raw egg) "surviving" a front-end collision test with a 1:8 ramp pitch.

It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Scientists have uncovered new details about endothelial cell differentiation that could lead to better management of vascular disease. Endothelial cells are often damaged in conditions like coronary artery disease. This damage can be repaired through the transplantation of healthy endothelial cells. But acquiring these cells at the quantities and purity needed for therapeutic transplantation is no easy task. To help solve this problem, the researchers took a closer look at the molecular factors that direct stem cells to adopt an endothelial phenotype. The team started by isolating mononuclear cells from just 1 mL of blood. They later reprogrammed these cells into induced pluripotent stem cells. To accomplish this, they used an optimized, non-integrating protocol – with very good results. The stem cells were then differentiated into endothelial cells, and the researchers tracked gene expression throughout the process..."
