The lessons in this project were developed as part of a collaborative effort between the Oregon Department of Education - Oregon Healthy Schools grant, and Multnomah ESD. Educators designed projects that integrated health or physical education standards with either math or science standards.  Project Summary:The project, “Think Before You Eat” is designed to provide students with a voice to be a change agent for their future environment and community. The motto for this unit, “If we know better, we do better.”Students will learn how plastic not only affects our earth's environment but also the harm it can have on us as individuals through the food chain. Students will identify these issues and develop new ways to create healthier alternatives for everyone by reducing plastic pollution. If we use less plastic, we eat less plastic. Students will create awareness in order to impact their communities.

In this lesson we read a book called, Some Secrets Should Never Be Kept, a story about a young person who is touched inappropriately  and is told to keep it a secret. We talk about how feelings and emotions can be signals to us, sometimes they’re letting us know something in our world doesn't make sense and we might need help figuring it out. We also talk about the way people sometimes use their power and position to manipulate situations to their advantage and to keep their victims silent.

This unit defines privacy, confidentiality, and security of health information, including the HIPPA Privacy and Security Rules.

This lesson provides a very basic overview of common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and the best ways to prevent their spread. STIs are extremely common (1 in 2 people will be exposed to one by the time they’re 25), so this lesson reinforces the importance of prevention, testing, and treatment.

This is a unit plan covering the history of the surgery. It is designed to take about 35 days (50-minute class periods). This unit is based on the book, The Butchering Art: Joseph Lister’s Quest to Transform the Grisly World of Victorian Medicine by Lindsey Fitzharris. For each of the chapters, vocab activities, pre-reading activities, and reflection questions have been created. A final project is included at the end of the unit. To grade this unit, the book is chunked into Portfolios (Prologue to Chapter 4, Chapters 5-8, Chapter 9 to Epilogue), which are designed to be the formative grades. Each of these Portfolios has a Portfolio Checksheet, which is a list of assignments that must be turned in for that unit. The Portfolios can be returned to the students and used on the final project. The final project is the summative grade for the unit. Quizzes could be added to this unit to increase the number of summative grades. To make this unit easier to facilitate, I would suggest purchasing the Audio Book, along with the hardcopies to help read to the class.

This unit describes healthcare delivery sites including outpatient care, hospitals, tertiary care centers, academic medical centers, the VA healthcare system, the military health system, the Indian health service, and non-traditional delivery sites such as school-based, community-based, and employer-based sites. It also specifically examines the structure, function and interrelationship between healthcare settings.

This class provides a space for medical students and MD/PhD students, as well as HASTS (History, Anthropology, Science, Technology, and Society) PhD students to discuss social and ethical issues in the biosciences and biotechnologies as they are being developed. Discussions are with course faculty and with leading figures in developing technologies such as George Daley or George Church in stem cell or genomics research, Bruce Walker or Pardis Sabeti in setting up laboratories in Africa, Paul Farmer and Partners in Health colleagues in building local support systems and first world quality care in Haiti, Peru, and Rwanda, and Amy Farber in building patient-centered therapeutic-outcome research for critical but “orphan” diseases. Goals include stimulating students to think about applying their learning in Boston to countries around the world, including using the experiences they have had in their home countries or research experience abroad. Goals also include a mix of patient-doctor care perspectives from medical anthropology, and moving upstream in the research chain to questions of how to move discoveries from basic research through the pipelines into clinical and bedside care.

This first lesson (of three) explains sexual and reproductive anatomy, and human reproduction via penis-in-vagina sexual intercourse (PIV sex). During this lesson, the educator will model the use of respectful, inclusive concepts and language to describe the process of human reproduction and family formation.

Efforts to Instill the Fundamental Principles of Rigorous ResearchRigorous experimental procedures and transparent reporting of research results are vital to the continued success of the biomedical enterprise at both the preclinical and the clinical levels; therefore, NINDS convened major stakeholders in October 2018 to discuss how best to encourage rigorous biomedical research practices. The attendees discussed potential improvements to current training resources meant to instill the principles of rigorous research in current and future scientists, ideal attributes of a potential new educational resource, and cultural factors needed to ensure the success of such training. We encouraged champions to organize themselves into intra- and inter-institutional communities to effect change within and across scientific institutions.
