This course provides a foundation to the design of the environment from the scale of the object, to the building to the larger territory. The design disciplines of architecture as well as urbanism and landscape are examined in context of the larger influence of the arts and sciences. Students are expected to develop skills in thinking and analysis, spatial representation, and design methodologies. Through lectures and design exercises, students are provided an opportunity to establish a reference for understanding the discipline of architecture and environmental design, and are given an introduction to design fundamentals and the design process.

"Space has always been a captivating destination and this decade may see the beginning of a long-term human presence on the Moon, with the US government committing to a sustained presence there by 2028. In space travel, microorganisms will inevitably travel along with the crew and although microbes are essential to human health they may pose serious health threats if inadequately managed. A recent study relied on a unique system to evaluate microbial transfer between crew and habitat. The Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation IV (HI-SEAS IV) mission was a year-long isolation study on an isolated space-like site on Hawaii’s Big Island. Using longitudinal DNA sequencing, researchers found significant differences in microbial diversity, abundance, and composition between samples from the environment and the crew..."

On the website, interested parties can help out with this effort by examining images of the moon's surface and providing feedback to be used by the team of researchers in charge of the Moon Zoo project. First-time visitors should click on the "How To Take Part" for a tutorial that will help determine which project they might be best suited for. Visitors who wish to take part in the project will need to register on the website, and that process only takes a few minutes. Moving on, the website has an online forum where users can trade information as well as a blog.
