"Accurate identification of medical alarm sounds can be life-saving, but current standard alarms are difficult to learn. One issue is that these alarms, despite having different melodies, possess highly similar tonal qualities. This makes it hard to distinguish, for example, an alarm indicating an abnormal heart rate from one denoting abnormal oxygen saturation. To ease interpretation, researchers have developed new auditory icon alarms. These real-world sounds are associated with the processes they represent, such as the sound made by pills rattling in a bottle to indicate a drug administration issue or the sound of assisted breathing to denote abnormal ventilation parameters. The intuitive reaction to such sounds should make the icon alarms easier to identify than standard alarms, creating new possibilities to improve patient safety. The team tested the usability of the icons in a simulated intensive care unit..."

Given an assortment of unknown metals to identify, student pairs consider what unique intrinsic (aka intensive) metal properties (such as density, viscosity, boiling or melting point) could be tested. For the provided activity materials (copper, aluminum, zinc, iron or brass), density is the only property that can be measured so groups experimentally determine the density of the "mystery" metal objects. They devise an experimental procedure to measure mass and volume in order to calculate density. They calculate average density of all the pieces (also via the graphing method if computer tools area available). Then students analyze their own data compared to class data and perform error analysis. Through this inquiry-based activity, students design their own experiments, thus experiencing scientific investigation and experimentation first hand. A provided PowerPoint(TM) file and information sheet helps to introduce the five metals, including information on their history, properties and uses.

"Viruses are a critical component of biosphere and human ecosystems, directly influencing human health and disease and controlling the output of engineered ecosystems. Unfortunately for scientists studying them, most viral signals remain hidden in sequence datasets due to a lack of optimal identification tools. A new tool aims to make virus identification easier. VirSorter2 is a DNA and RNA virus identification tool that leverages genome-informed database advances to improve the accuracy and range of virus sequence detection. Compared with other tools, VirSorter2 performs more consistently with high accuracy across diverse viruses and minimized errors associated with atypical cellular sequences, including eukaryotic genomes and plasmids. VirSorter2 is also modular, allowing it to expand to newly discovered viruses through the design of new viral classifiers..."
