to show that language brokering is a common practice that takes place in many schools around the world;
to promote a deeper understanding of what language brokering usually implies for young people;
to present some situations that teachers can analyze and discuss with their students from multiple perspectives as part of reflective practice;
to appreciate multilingualism and raise awareness among young people who translate and interpret in schools;
to provide young language brokers with tools and strategies to express how they feel about language brokering, and thus to take care of emotional health.

This book disseminates practices shared at the annual event Every Teacher is a Language Teacher held at the Faculty of Education (University of Ottawa) for all first-year Bachelor of Education teacher candidates. This resource responds directly to calls from attendees for a resource that synthesizes the content shared at each workshop, enabling them to access and implement the rich pedagogical knowledge shared. The book is meant to serve as a textbook for Teacher Education courses, graduate courses, as well as an ongoing promotion of research-based practices created by Faculty of Education partners (faculty and graduate students alike) that should be shared more widely with Canadian language educators, teachers and consultants, particularly in its bilingual format. This publication is unique and particularly useful to both pre- and in-service teachers, as it offers modes of practice based on both research and theory. This means it is neither exclusively a lesson plan nor a theoretical analysis; but rather a synthesis that aims to show how the two domains inform one another. We see it as being immediately valuable for teacher and teacher educators, while also filling a gap in the field of language education more widely -- one that embodies anti-racist, ethical paradigms within current interdisciplinary practice in its responsiveness to challenges of modern technology and globalization.

This volume is a result of our annual event, Every Teacher is a Language Teacher, held in 2021 and 2022 at the Faculty of Education of the University of Ottawa. Every year, we organize professional learning workshops for teacher candidates in our program. We invite seasoned teachers and young researchers (many of whom are also teachers!) doing their graduate work at the faculty to share methods, ideas, strategies and activities. Together, our community explores how to work with English and French language learners, as well as learners who come to the classroom with multiple languages in their repertoire. As research and experience have shown us, accessing students’ funds of linguistic and cultural knowledge is a powerful way to include students in the curriculum and center their contributions, identities, and experiences in the learning process. As a community of committed educators, we practice teacher learning with this same mindset – we draw from the personal and professional experiences of our guest presenters and teacher candidate attendees. Together, we speak to the social, cultural and political issues that matter in the classroom and share cutting-edge practices. The chapters in this book are intended for teachers who may or may not have a language teaching specialization. So as to promote equitable access to knowledge, we asked our presenters to write chapters based on their workshops and the experiences they had with our teacher candidates. They write in direct, accessible language and draw on the literature about language learning and teaching grounding their work in tried and tested initiatives. As such, for the reader, we hope the chapters will provide insight into what occurred during the workshops and how they can benefit from these professional learning sessions.

Inclusion, Diversity and Communication Across Cultures: A Teacher's Book with Classroom Activities for Secondary Education

Children and young people play an important role in migratory processes because they may act as links between their families, local communities and their school. Schooling and linguistic immersion in the host society can help young people learn the official language(s) of their new country faster than their parents or other adults. When they broker in a school context, they bring linguistic diversity to the school and display truly multilingual and multicultural skills that are part of their daily life. This Teacher's Book aims to help you and your students explore some of the complexity involved in young people taking on such roles in modern societies. Therefore, the aim of this Teacher's Book is twofold: (a) to celebrate multilingualism and raise awareness of young people translating and interpreting in schools, an activity also known as child language brokering; and (b) to provide a resource containing background information and interactive activities aimed at giving teachers tools for a deeper understanding of what language brokering by young people usually entails, so that you can then pass it on to your students. If you've ever wondered why we need concepts like noun and verb or word and phrase when discussing language, this book is for you. Deliberately selective in its approach and assuming no prior knowledge of linguistics, The Language of Language explores the nature of language and linguists' agreed-upon ways of talking about the object of their inquiry. Our focus is on modes of thinking rather than content knowledge. Our goal is to encourage informed thinking about (why) language matters, so that you can continue puzzling about language issues long after you've worked your way through this book.Now in its third edition, the book is packed with over 100 commented activities, examples of language play, and fun food for thought, designed to whet your appetite for linguistics and language studies.The companion workbook, Lang101 Workbook, contains 460 additional commented exercises and activities, designed for self-study or for the classroom.

Multilinguals are ...?

Multilinguals, those of us who use more than one language in everyday life, are... gifted semilinguals who are dominant in no mother tongue, for example? Apparently so, judging by the ways people keep talking about them. This is the first book that discusses, in light-hearted lay terms, the reasons behind the beliefs and myths about multilinguals that allow you to fill the blank in its title with almost any label and get away with it. Drawing on solid academic research, the book provides keys to the origin and endurance of the many intriguing names that multilinguals have been called, starting with the master-key to them all. The conclusion is that any oddities assigned to multilinguals are due to the language that is used to talk about them, not to multilingual behaviour itself. The book is abundantly illustrated and includes many cartoons. It is written for the general public, families, teachers, policy-makers, clinicians, and anyone who ever wondered about multilingualism, but is targeted exclusively at multilingual or monolingual readers (of English).
