Welcome to the band here at NDSCS! We are going to have a lot of fun, making music, and getting better and better each time we meet. Whether this is the first time you’ve ever played in a band, or you’ve been playing for years; whether you were your high school’s top chair player or you struggled to get through a B♭ concert scale, there is a place for you here.

This course covers the fundamentals of tonal music theory: pitch notation; rhythm and meter; major and minor scales; intervals; triads and seventh chords, as well as common terms and symbols used in common practice music. By the end of this course students will be able to read pitches in common clefs and will be familiar with note durations and meters. They will also learn to spell and recognize key signatures, major and minor scales, intervals, and triads and will become familiar with the concept of harmonic function and cadence. After completing this course, students will be ready to begin the undergraduate music theory sequence (Theory I-IV).
Students use scaling from real-world data to obtain an idea of the immense size of Mars in relation to the Earth and the Moon, as well as the distances between them. Students calculate dimensions of the scaled versions of the planets, and then use balloons to represent their relative sizes and locations.
This collection is the first of five dealing with the rudiments of music.
