In continuation of this, we will discuss what we can do about air pollution at global, international, national, city and individual levels. This presentation focus’ on the health benefits of being physically active and describes how physical training affects energy balance and metabolic health. Furthermore we’ll discuss the potential of physical training in prevention and treatment of obesity and diabetes and finally we’ll demonstrate methods that can be used to evaluate physical fitness, body fat distribution and insulin sensitivity.

In this presentation you will learn about the evolution of diabetes and how it affects the world population. Diabetes is probably recognized as one of the biggest global health challenges in the 21st century. Figures from 2012 shows that diabetes caused the death of 1.5 million people and lead to an additional 2.2 million deaths caused by higher than optimal blood glucose, which increases the risk of cardiovascular and other diseases. The prevalence of diabetes is rising in all income groups, however over the past decade it has risen faster in low and middle income countries rather than in high income countries.

This multidisciplinary seminar addresses fundamental issues in global health faced by community-based healthcare programs in developing countries. Students will broadly explore topics with expert lecturers and guided readings. Topics will be further illuminated with case studies from healthcare programs in urban centers of Zambia. Multidisciplinary teams will be formed to develop feasible solutions to specific health challenges posed in the case studies and encouraged to pursue their ideas beyond the seminar. Possible global health topics include community-based AIDS/HIV management, maternity care, health diagnostics, and information technology in patient management and tracking. Students from Medicine, Public Health, Engineering, Management, and Social Sciences are encouraged to enroll. No specific background experience is expected, but students should have some relevant skills or experiences.

This interview provides an introduction to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) regarding the global control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). The FCTC treaty is a response to the worry of member states, that tobacco is not decreasing but rather growing. Furthermore it is discussed how we can make sure people don’t start smoking or quit as early as possible.

Global Health Governance is how we create an organized response to health at the global level. Each country has its own health system, but health issues are become international, as people travel, and goods and services (for example tobacco sales) are becoming increasingly globalised, and challenges such as climate change have a wide reach. WHO has an important guiding role in the global health architecture, but it has limited funding and mandate to establish and implement legally binding acts.

This interview provides knowledge about which role WHO plays in the shaping of global health, and how WHO’s role relates to the roles of government, non-government and other actors. Furthermore we’ll explore what a “health in all policies” approach is and why it’s important in the combat of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). Finally we’ll discuss the role of an integrated approach in relation to public health in general and the NCDs in particular.

Pesticide self-poisoning is among the leading cause of suicide worldwide. This presentation provides us with an insight to the risk factors for pesticide self-poisoning, the global burden, prevention and treatment of self-harm with pesticides. The session use Sri Lanka as a case. The presentation is of relevance for researchers as well as for public health practitioners. It exemplifies how the different levels of intervention have to work very closely to make an impact.

"A new preprint reports one factor that might contribute to the deadliness of the COVID-19 pandemic: wearing shoes indoors. Researchers compared COVID-19 death rates between countries that follow the cultural practice of removing shoes indoors and those that do not and observed a distinct pattern. Those where removing shoes is customary showed a lower death rate on average. Interestingly, no significant differences were observed when countries were compared according to the number of COVID-19 cases. It could be that the lack of reliable, universal testing may obscure the true prevalence of the disease. More work is still needed to discount a number of confounding factors, such as differences in preventive measures enacted by different countries, but the correlation suggests that removing shoes indoors might help curb the devastation wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic..."
