    Overview

    This single day lesson plan includes guided notes and lecture materials covering the topic of Nutritional Needs Assessments for athletes. This lesson would be best implemented as a first day within the unit. Students will follow along with the teachers lecture using guided notetaking. Key Terms: Carbohydrates, Performance, BMR, Cardivascular Training, Anearobic, Aerobic, and Digestion. 

    Overview

    Essential Questions: 

    • How can we assess the nutritional and performance needs of athletes?
    • What an we do nutritionally to improve performance?
    • What tools and tests can we use to better analyze performance needs?

    Learning Objectives:

    • TSWBAT define body weight 
    • TSWBAT define body fat
    • TSWBAT compare and contrast body weight and body fat
    • TSWBAT identify and compare aerobic and anerobic exercise
    • TSWBAT identify the compare carbohydrates
    • TSWBAT assess an athletes fluid intake needs 
    • TSWBAT define BMR
    • TSWBAT understand the importance of performing a needs assessment 

    NE FCS Standards:

    • HSE.HS.3.9 Summarize sports nutrition and wellness practices of athletes.
    • HSE.HS.3.9.c Explain the value of hydration for athletes
    • HSE.HS.3.9.a Evaluate food intake of athletes.

    Materials:

    • Assessing Performance Needs Presentation 
      • Projector / Screen Sharing Device 
    • Assessing Performance Needs Guided Notes 
      • Printed / Shared with each student
      • Writing Utensil 

    Lesson Sequence:

    • Class Discussion 
      • Compare athletes from two completely different sports and discuss how they may have different nutritional needs to be successful.
    • Presentation 
      • Guided Notes & Pause at Discussion Points
