Grenzenlos Deutsch – an open-access curriculum for beginning German
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

Grenzenlos Deutsch is a no-cost alternative to textbooks. We seek to represent a breadth of perspectives that will enable our students to talk about their own lives; thus we have designed content that is actively feminist, anti-racist, anti-classist, anti-ableist, LGBTQIA+ friendly and represents a spectrum of experience.

For each of the thematic modules, there are three units of increasing complexity. Each unit has approximately six lessons, and each lesson has an Erweiterung, which includes additional activities to recap and solidify activities in the main lesson; they were designed to be used as homework or in additional hours (for example, in a lab or conversation session).

Visit https://grenzenlos-deutsch.com/ for the full curriculum.

Grenzenlos Deutsch (GD) is:

Interactive: The activities are intended to give you opportunities to practice some of the skills you’ll be learning along the way.
Cultural: Each lesson includes readings and/or video that relates to some aspect of DACHL culture (D- Germany; A- Austria; CH- Switzerland; L-Liechtenstein).
Inclusive: One of our goals is to make it possible for you to talk about yourself and your life in German, and thus we introduce basic language for talking about LGBTQIA+ identities, complex family structures, and lifestyle choices such as veganism, vegetarianism, and intentional communities.
OER: Grenzenlos Deutsch is an Open Educational Resource. This means that all of the content, including photos and videos, can be used, reused, and shared with attribution given to Grenzenlos Deutsch. Licensed CC-BY-NC-SA: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/

Hoe om 'n joernalis in die 21ste eeu te wees.pdf

This is the Afrikaans translation of the OER textbook How to be a journalist in the 21st century, written by the same authors and available here on OER commons: https://www.oercommons.org/courses/how-to-be-a-journalist-in-the-21st-century-pdf

The description below is in Afrikaans (it is the same description as for the English version, which can be accessed through the link above).

How to be a journalist in the 21st century.pdf

This textbook is an introduction to journalism, in the African and South African context, written for digital natives. The textbook is unique in the sense that students and the lecturer wrote it together, it is therefore a resource that focuses on learning through the eyes of students in Africa and the things they would like to learn to become journalists. The writers are Andre Gouws, lecturer in journalism at North-West University in Potchefstroom, South Africa, and his first-year and second-year students from 2021.

The purpose of this open textbook is to provide a general introduction to journalism in the 21st century to both journalism students and anyone who, perhaps unknowingly, create their own types of journalism. These new types of journalists include bloggers, entrepreneurial journalists, social media users, newsletter writers, and YouTube and TikTok creators, among others. In the digital era, journalism skills are valuable skills to anyone who creates or distributes news or information. Journalism skills include an understanding of news, the context of the media, legal and ethical issues around creating and distributing all types of content, and practical skills. This textbook contains ideas to help prospective independent journalists with journalistic entrepreneurship. Scholars agree that journalism can be defined very broadly today. It is no longer something that only trained journalists do. Knowing and understanding journalism will help everyone to tell better stories; to perhaps earn an independent income; and, importantly, to do it an ethical and compassionate way.

Intermediate Biblical Greek Reader: Galatians and Related Texts
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted

Rating
0.0 stars

Short Description:
This intermediate graded reader is designed to move from simpler translation work (Galatians) towards more advanced readings from the book of James, the Septuagint, and from one of the Church Fathers. In each reading lesson, the Greek text is given, followed by supplemental notes that offer help with vocabulary, challenging word forms, and syntax. Discussion questions are also included to foster group conversation and engagement.

Long Description:
After completing basic biblical Greek, students are often eager to continue to learn and strengthen their skills of translation and interpretation. This intermediate graded reader is designed to meet those needs. The reader is “intermediate” in the sense that it presumes the user will have already learned the basics of Greek grammar and syntax and has memorized Greek vocabulary words that appear frequently in the New Testament. The reader is “graded” in the sense that it moves from simpler translation work (Galatians) towards more advanced readings from the book of James, the Septuagint, and from one of the Church Fathers. In each reading lesson, the Greek text is given, followed by supplemental notes that offer help with vocabulary, challenging word forms, and syntax. Discussion questions are also included to foster group conversation and engagement.

There are many good Greek readers in existence, but this reader differs from most others in a few important ways. Most readers offer text selections from different parts of the Bible, but in this reader the user works through one entire book (Galatians). All subsequent lessons, then, build off of this interaction with Galatians through short readings that are in some way related to Galatians. The Septuagint passages in the reader offer some broader context for texts that Paul quotes explicitly from the Septuagint. The Patristic reading from John Chrysystom comes from one of his homilies on Galatians. This approach to a Greek reader allows for both variety and coherence in the learning process.

Other unique features within this intermediate Greek reader include a set of word studies for important Greek words in Galatians, a discussion of the basics of textual criticism, and a brief glossary of syntax and key concepts in biblical Greek.
