Students continue exploring coding sequences, using the programming game Lightbot.
As students work through tricky puzzles and make use of the Lightbot interface’s ability to restart execution from the beginning, they experience the value of iterative development.
If they are ready, students advance from Lightbot’s introductory levels to levels that require them to create and use procedures (functions).
Iterative development, and the shift from long, repetitive code to shorter, clearer code, are both concepts that will be relevant to students’ final coding project at the end of the unit.

Unit OverviewThis unit focuses on the various modes of local, national and world news. Students will read, evaluate and integrate multiple sources of information to gain perspective and understanding of a variety of news events. Through a structured instructional sequence, students will gain knowledge about current news, discuss the events, analyze news sources, identify bias and write brief news articles or reports based on research. The unifying theme, What’s News? will guide students as they discuss the essential question, How does the news influence us?A variety of focus texts and resources are suggested. Depending on your class and available resources, other texts may easily be substituted. Teachers may develop a customized instructional sequence with alternate news articles appropriate to the needs and make-up of the community/school population.It is important teachers prepare fully by reading all resources and consider their students when planning to implement this unit. Time frames may vary depending on the daily amount of instructional time allotted, the student group and the degree of teacher support required for students to meet with success.Teacher Note: The news of today can be very graphic and disturbing. It is important you intentionally select articles and news that do not deal with violence of any kind but that does engage 5th graders. Remember to consciously be aware of this aspect of the news for the general public. Included in this plan are a variety of “kid friendly” news sites to access. You could write a letter to the parents of your class informing them of the unit’s intent and your plan for implementing it. For guidance, watch the TVO video about TKN and Media Literacy video at the bottom of the home page www.teachingkidsnews.com.The lesson models in this unit feature best practices using informational texts to address Common Core State Standards. Included are examples of text dependent questions and sample responses to guide instruction. Graphing the Spread of Disease

Students simulate disease transmission by collecting data based on their proximity to other students. One option for measuring proximity is by having Bluetooth devices "discover" each other. After data is collected, students apply graph theory to analyze it, and summarize their data and findings in lab report format. Students learn real-world engineering applications of graph theory and see how numerous instances of real-world relationships can be more thoroughly understood by applying graph theory. Also, by applying graph theory the students are able to come up with possible solutions to limit the spread of disease. The activity is intended to be part of a computer science curriculum and knowledge of the Java programming language is required. To complete the activity, a computer with Java installed and appropriate editing software is needed.

Students write code using symbols to produce “graph paper” pixel art, first practicing as a class, then in pairs or groups.
The groups will trade instructions with each other and try following them to draw a picture.
Students get familiar with the concept of “stamping” an image on the page or the screen, and if there is time, students use loops to reduce the complexity of their programs. These concepts will be important in their final coding project at the end of the unit.

A grocery store marketing tour I developed for my 10-year-old nephew after noticing that he was interested in how money (particularly buying/selling) worked. The tour took about 1 hour and then about 15-30 minutes for him to pick and purchase the items he wanted with the $10 I gave him. The information in this guide is a compilation of industry stories from primary and secondary sources. I encourage you to do your own research to confirm the accuracy of these stories.I also encourage you to use this as a guide and be ready to adapt and use different examples, different products, etc. depending on what the student is engaging with and what is available at your local grocery store.
