You will be using habits of mind which focus on clarity in communication, as well as accessing prior knowledge to make new decisions regarding the purpose of text. This sequence of instruction was developed in the Growing Elementary Science Prjoject to help elementary teachers who were working remotely. We developed a short storyline that ties together a few sessions to help explore a specific concept. We tried to include some activities that honored and included the student’s family and experience, and some that included the potential for ELA learning goals. In this Unit of Instruction, students observe animal behaviors - both in video format and in their own neighborhoods - then create a model to explain how these behaviors help the animals meet their needs. It is part of ClimeTime - a collaboration among all nine Educational Service Districts (ESDs) in Washington and many Community Partners to provide programs for science teacher training around Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and climate science, thanks to grant money made available to the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) by Governor Inslee.

Students will identify with characters in stories to understand that feelings can be shared between themselves, other characters, and other students in our World. Students will also identify the similarities and differences between two different texts in order to understand the main idea.
Lesson is utilized for “@ home” learning prior to the fitness testing portion of the school year. Students are provided with a "log" to be completed at home during remote learning period. The behaviors are intended to improve students self awareness as well as the different fitness components required to build a healthy body and brain.
This Force and motion Roller Coaster activity was done with my 5th grade class and they enjoyed it. It took longer than a normal science period but was a fun end of the year activity to help students stay engaged to their learning.
