Focused classrooms maximise students’ on-task learning time by minimising disruptive behaviour and disengagement. Research shows that students cannot learn as well in classrooms that lack consistency, have too many potential distractions or do not offer ample opportunities to engage. Teachers can create focused classrooms by implementing clear structures and routines, modelling appropriate behaviours, and actively engaging students in their learning.

Implementation checklists are a list of practical steps you can take to support the implementation of an evidence-based practice in your setting.

This checklist focuses on implementing a focused classroom.

Have I...

* established and explicitly taught positive rules for learning?
* developed routines that signal to students when learning is ready to begin and how learning will happen?
* organised my classroom to promote on task behaviour so that learning routines can be embedded consistently?
*explicitly taught the verbal and non-verbal cues about the rules and routines for learning to my students so that they can regulate themselves?
*set learning goals for my students that are both ambitious but achievable? (Consult your formative assessment data and mastery learning objectives to help with this)
*explored various options for participation that enable all students to participate in class activities? (for example, different types of grouping).

Assigning students particular roles can be an effective way to organize groups and simulate job site communication.  Assigning a ‘foreman’ for groups in an agriculture education classroom helps to distribute responsibility among group members and ensures accountability for all students’ participation. As students practice assuming greater responsibility, they can develop new skills. Designed by Donald Fowler.

Form and Function(s): A Sustainable Design meets Computation Design Plan

IntroductionThe Concept behind Form and Function(s): Sustainable Design meets Computational ThinkingWhen Architecture, the Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing intermingle something beautiful and purposeful occurs. Through this course of study, students are challenged to think computationally by considering the notion of “design” through three perspectives on form and function.  Through the first perspective, we challenge students to consider a structure’s architectural form in the context of its function within the ecology in which it belongs.  A second perspective on form and function is provided by way of the natural sciences, where students explore nature’s designs, which are created through natural selection.  Finally, form and function are further abstracted through a mathematical and computational perspective that focuses on how natural selection can be emulated through modelling and coding. The journey comes full circle, and the three perspectives coalesce when students engage in a hack-a-thon in which they model and code evolutionary algorithms to design a better building.Watch the Form and Function(s) animation on the Callysto Youtube channel.

What does formative assessment look like during distance learning? Without proximity, how can teachers gather and act on “in-the-moment” information – the behaviors, emotions, and situations that affect learning and inform instruction?
This resource provides explanations, sample questions, and possible actions to implement formative assessment during distance learning scenarios.

Formative assessment refers to the variety of methods teachers use to gather and interpret information about student learning as learning is taking place. Formative assessment allows teachers to monitor student learning and to adapt their teaching to meet student learning needs. It can also help with students’ learning retention by bringing what students have learned to the top of their mind. Formative assessment is most effective when it is a regular part of teaching and learning programs.
