Charles Chesnutt in the Classroom

In the world of engaged learning, teachers are inspired by students. I teach primarily classes in African American literature, many of which answer requirements for General Education credit. Because General Education enrollment consists of students from colleges across the university, I have the opportunity to introduce a diverse group of students to the works of Charles Chesnutt, whom I describe as “the most famous Cleveland writer you’ve never heard of.” Inevitably, despite their diverse academic majors, all agree that what they are learning needs to be shared with teachers in the Cleveland Metropolitan school system. Yet while there are numerous websites devoted to Charles Chesnutt, few pay more than passing attention to his association with Cleveland, where Chesnutt was born in 1858, returned in 1883, built one the city’s most successful court reporting businesses, and wrote continuously until his death in 1932.

This resource is a supplement to the modified rubric from the Washington Models for the Evaluation of Bias Content in Instructional Materials (2009) that is made available through OER Commons under a public domain license. This resource attempts to both update the content with more contemporary vocabulary and also to narrow the scope to evaluating still images as they are found online. It was developed as a secondary project while working on a BranchED OER grant during summer 2020. It includes an attached rubric adapted from the Washington Model (2009).This checklist was created for higher education purposes to review course content for diversity and inclusivity.

Chemeketa Community College is committed to creating an inclusive learning environment that meets the needs of its diverse employee and student bodies. This means that all students, faculty and staff including those with disabilities, are provided equal and equitable access to all digital resources, technologies, websites and and other services used to provide information, assistance, programs, services or any other access to Chemeketa faculty, staff, students or visitors. An Action Plan Team convened to help develop a plan in conjunction with a Digital Accessibility Policy that was in development for the College. The purpose of the team was to consider ways to help implement and promote the policy along the way. The team put together some specifics of what should be put into both the process and guideline documents to help guide the accessibility work once the policy is in place.

Chemistry Education Research and Practice (CERP) is the journal for teachers, researchers and other practitioners at all levels of chemistry education. It is published free of charge, electronically, four times a year; coverage includes the following:

-Research, and reviews of research, in chemistry education
-Evaluations of effective innovative practice in the teaching of chemistry
-In-depth analyses of issues of direct relevance to chemistry education

The objectives of the journal follow:

-To provide researchers with the means to publish their work in full in a journal exclusively dedicated to chemistry education
-To offer teachers of chemistry at all levels a place where they can share effective ideas and methods for the teaching and learning of chemistry
-Most importantly, to bridge the gap between the two groups so that researchers will have their results seen by those who could benefit from using them, and practitioners will gain from encountering the ideas and results of those who have made a particular study of the learning process
