This is the first history of the Institute of Information Scientists, which was founded in 1958 and merged with the Library Association in 2002 to form the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals. In the absence of a formal archive the history has been written by three former Presidents based on secondary sources and the memories of former members.

Long Description:
The Institute of Information Scientists (IIS) was formally constituted in 1958. It merged with the Library Association to form the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals in 2002. During 45 years of professional service and leadership, it defined and developed information science as a discipline; established and promoted education, training and research in the field; developed and vetted curricula in information science programmes; organised events and conferences; established the Journal of Information Science, and raised professional standards.

The archive of the Institute seems not to have survived the merger, and so this history, written by three former Presidents, is based on secondary sources (such as the Inform newsletter) and the memories of the authors (who all joined the Institute in 1974) and those of former members The book covers the formation of the Institute, its governance structure, membership grades, Special Interest Groups (including UKOLUG), professional development activities, publications, conferences and events, the Strix and Farradane Awards (which continue under CILIP) and a substantial chapter on the external activities of the Institute in the UK and across Europe. There are biographical profiles of all the Presidents and a chronology of important events and decisions.

The onset of new, more accessible, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies marks a significant turning point for libraries, ushering in a period rich with both unparalleled opportunities and complex challenges. In this era of swift technological transformation, libraries stand at a critical intersection. To effectively chart this transition, two quick polls were conducted among members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL).

The first poll, which ran in April 2023, provided an initial snapshot of the AI landscape in libraries. The second poll, carried out in December 2023, continued this inquiry, offering a comparative perspective on the evolving dynamics of AI use and possibilities in library services. This study analyzes and juxtaposes the outcomes of these two surveys to better understand how library leaders are managing the complexities of integrating AI into their operations and services. It specifically seeks to capture changing perspectives on the potential impact of AI, assess the extent of AI exploration and implementation within libraries, and identify AI applications relevant to the current library environment.

The insights derived from this comparative analysis shed light on the role of libraries in an increasingly AI-driven era, providing strategic directions and highlighting practices in research libraries.

The Experimental Project Lab in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics is a two-semester course sequence: 16.621 Experimental Projects I (this course) and 16.622 Experimental Projects II. This site offers material on 16.621. In the course, two-person teams initiate a project of their own conception and design in 16.621 and then complete it in 16.622. For many students, this is a first encounter with research standards and techniques. It is a complicated course that requires a lot of interaction and support and also access to facilities and materials, but it is rewarding for students to explore an hypothesis under the guidance of a faculty advisor.
This OCW site presents the building block materials of the course, which can provide only a profile of the course because the most important learning elements are the interactions between student team, faculty, project advisor, and shop staff and also between student team members. However, this site offers some of the preparation and guidance materials for students embarking on an experimental project. The Experimental Project Lab in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics is a two-semester course sequence: 16.621 Experimental Projects I and 16.622 Experimental Projects II (this course). Students in 16.622 gain practical insight and improved understanding of engineering experimentation through design and execution of “project” experiments. Building upon work in course 16.621, students construct and test equipment, make systematic experimental measurements of phenomena, analyze data, and compare theoretical predictions with results. Deliverables comprise a written final project report and formal oral presentations. Instructions on oral presentations and multi-section reporting are given. "Congenital heart defects affect approximately 1% of all babies born each year and account for almost 20% of all newborn deaths. Early diagnosis while still in the womb can greatly improve an affected baby’s chance of survival. Unfortunately, diagnosis relies exclusively on ultrasound imaging, where accurate readings aren’t guaranteed. Researchers in Japan are tackling this problem by enlisting the help of artificial intelligence. More importantly, they’re helping the doctors entrusted with patient care to understand how AI programs spot heart defects. Advancements in artificial intelligence have improved how congenital heart defects are diagnosed. Ultrasound videos of fetal hearts beating normally and others with structural defects can be studied with AI, which can then determine whether the fetal hearts in new videos are abnormal or not..."
