In this interdisciplinary lesson, students will apply the Engineer Design Process to design a structure to remove waste from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The lesson involves components of STEM and English Language Arts. This lesson results from collaboration between the Alabama Department of Education and ASTA.

Filmed Shakespeare began in 1899, with Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree performing the death scene from King John for the camera. Sarah Bernhardt, who had played Hamlet a number of times in her long career, filmed the duel scene for the Paris Exposition of 1900. In the era of silent film (1895-1929) several hundred Shakespeare films were made in England, France Germany and the United States, Even without the spoken word, Shakespeare was popular in the new medium. The first half-century of sound included many of the most highly regarded Shakespeare films, among them – Laurence Olivier’s Hamlet and Henry V, Orson Welles’ Othello and Chimes at Midnight, Kurosawa’s Throne of Blood, Polanski’s Macbeth and Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet. We are now in the midst of an extremely rich and varied period for Shakespeare on film which began with the release of Kenneth Branagh’s Henry V in 1989 and includes such films as Richard Loncraine’s Richard III, Julie Taymor’s Titus, Zeffirelli and Almereyda’s Hamlet films, Baz Luhrmann’s William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, and Shakespeare in Love. The phenomenon of filmed Shakespeare raises many questions for literary and media studies about adaptation, authorship, the status of “classic” texts and their variant forms, the role of Shakespeare in youth and popular culture, and the transition from manuscript, book and stage to the modern medium of film and its recent digitally inflected forms.
Most of our work will involve individual and group analysis of the “film text” – that is, of specific sequences in the films, aided by videotape, DVD, the Shakespeare Electronic Archive, and some of the software tools for video annoatation developed by the MIT Shakespeare Project under the MIT-Microsoft iCampus Initiative.
We will study the films as works of art in their own right, and try to understand the means – literary, dramatic, performative, cinematic – by which they engage audiences and create meaning. With Shakespeare film as example, we will discuss how stories cross time, culture and media, and reflect on the benefits as well as the limitations of such migration.
The class will be conducted as a structured discussion, punctuated by student presentations and “mini-lectures” by the instructor. Students will introduce discussions, prepare clips and examples, and the major “written” work will take the form of presentations to the class and multimedia annotations as well as conventional short essays.
The methodological bias of the class is close “reading” of both text and film. This is a class in which your insights will form a major part of the work and will be the basis of a large fraction of class discussion. You will need to read carefully, to watch and listen to the films carefully, and develop effective ways of conveying your ideas to the class.

This activity is an introduction to the study of birds. Students will gain observation and classification skills.

Abstract
An afterschool book club, through these lesson plans, is exploring Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The integration of hands-on activities serves to help students connect to the story, think critically, and build interdisciplinary skills.

This Remote Learning Plan was created by Amy Brown in collaboration with Eileen Barks and Caryn Ziettlow as part of the 2020 ESU-NDE Remote Learning Plan Project. Educators worked with coaches to create Remote Learning Plans as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.The attached Remote Learning Plan is designed for 11 Grade, English Language Arts students. Students will begin with an introduction to Willa Cather through autobiographical readings and video.  They will then move to “A Wagner Matinee” a short story written by Willa Cather and either write a short paragraph describing the theme of the story or create a graphic Theme drawing.  The final lesson in this is to read My Antonia by Willa Cather, annotate the chapters, and create various character projects at the end of the novel.   This Remote Learning Plan addresses the following NDE Standard: 12.1.6b,12.1.6h, 12.1.6i,  12.3.1 a, 12.3.1b; 12.3.3a, and 12.3.3b. It is expected that this Remote Learning Plan will take students 7 Weeks to complete.  

In this syllabus from Spring 2023, Dr. Michelle McQuade Dewhirst provides bibliographic citations for open education resources used in place of a traditional textbook. This course examines Western art music from the end of the Classical era to the present. The topics covered in this course include: Beethoven: The Man, the Myth, the Legend; Romanticism and Art Song; Romanticism in Instrumental Genres; Romanticism in Opera; Diverging Traditions in the Later 19th Century; Late Romanticism; The Early Twentieth Century; Modernism; Now What? -Isms; The Twenty-First Century

This set of lessons extends over several weeks and incorporates all acts of Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible. Students will closely read The Crucible. Students will cite textual evidence and make interpretations about character development. Students will combine the textual evidence with their interpretations and write interpretive statements. In the culminating activity, students will write a character analysis.

This lesson can be used with numerous pieces of literature, videos or cassette material to develop viewing and listening skills and the students ability to compare and contrast. One of the richest sources is in the area of fairytales and folktales. This an especially good source if you can find a modernized version in video or cassette form to contrast with the more traditional written form. I have used the "Frog Prince" because of this factor and because it was part of the 4th grade language arts reading unit.
