This module is designed to help learners of Swahili as a foreign language achieve Advanced Low proficiency on the ACTFL scale. For classroom learners, it is most appropriate for students who have already studied Swahili for two or three academic years, while self-directed learners and/or those who have spent a significant amount of time in East Africa may find it useful at earlier or later stages of study.

Direct Energy Conversion discusses both the physics behind energy conversion processes and a wide variety of energy conversion devices. A direct energy conversion process converts one form of energy to another through a single process. The first half of this book surveys multiple devices that convert to or from electricity including piezoelectric devices, antennas, solar cells, light emitting diodes, lasers, thermoelectric devices, and batteries. In these chapters, physical effects are discussed, terminology used by engineers in the discipline is introduced, and insights into material selection is studied. The second part of this book puts concepts of energy conversion in a more abstract framework. These chapters introduce the idea of calculus of variations and illuminate relationships between energy conversion processes.

This peer-reviewed book is used for a junior level electrical engineering class at Trine University. However, it is intended not just for electrical engineers. Direct energy conversion is a fascinating topic because it does not fit neatly into a single discipline. This book also should be of interest to physicists, chemists, mechanical engineers, and other researchers interestedin an introduction to the energy conversion devices studied by scientists and engineers in other disciplines

Perspectives situées

Short Description:

Long Description:
Discourse Community for Future Business Leaders is meant to help improve student learning outcomes in writing for business students across post-secondary institutions by exposing them to discourse community, and the importance of understanding lexis and its use in effective business communication. It is an interactive tool for connecting discourse to collegiate writing, that can be used in the classroom and beyond, and can greatly improve student outcomes through this self-directed study.

This text lends itself to improved business expository writing (succinct sentence structure, compelling thesis statements, persuasive arguments, passive vs. active voice, appropriate lexis, and jargon) and is designed as a supplemental OER for business students in composition and research courses. It fills a void in the high-need area of business composition that will increase writing achievement for collegiate business students.

Rating
0.0 stars

Short Description:
Disinformation: Dealing with the Disaster provides a foundational knowledge of today’s chaotic online information environment. Readers will come to understand various concerning concepts such as information overload and fake news, while engaging in discussions about familiar online entities including trolls, bots and influencers. Each chapter culminates in an important lesson about how to begin to deal with the disaster and take meaningful steps towards becoming responsible digital citizens.

Long Description:
Disinformation: Dealing with the Disaster is an accompaniment to an online course with the same title. The first four chapters provide an overview of fundamental concepts and phenomena that have led us to our current online information environment. Chapter 1, Information Disorder, examines information and its evolution, looking briefly at historical and contemporary trends in the areas of misinformation, disinformation, online propaganda and more. Chapter 2, Information Distribution, provides a simple overview of the news industry including journalism and editing, as well as the progression of fake news–a politicized concept which is leading us into a post-truth world. Chapter 3, Information Automation, takes readers through the automatic aspects of information exploration, examining search engines, algorithms, and associated concepts. Chapter 4, Information Manipulation, explores human interactions with information, focusing on how humans share, consume, and interact with information on social media. Each chapter provides the reader with a base level of a specific literacy (information, media, digital and meta) making them better equipped to confront disinformation. The final chapter provides readers with various frameworks and tools for effectively evaluating information and suggests that readers integrate them into their online search behaviors.
