"Though a seemingly simple task, eating requires a coordinated effort between multiple oral muscles, such as those found in the tongue and lips. A new study conducted by researchers in Japan has found a link between the strength of these muscles and a condition called ‘nutrition-related sarcopenia’. From childhood through young adulthood, your muscles continually grow larger and stronger. At some point in mid-life, however, this trajectory switches course and many muscles begin to deteriorate, a progression termed sarcopenia. While this muscle loss is a natural part of the aging process, malnutrition has been suggested to amplify the problem. And, because nutritional intake involves oral function, degeneration of these muscles may play a role. In hopes of clarifying this relationship, the team evaluated more than 200 patients over the age of 65 for malnutrition and assessed factors such as tongue strength, lip strength, and the amount of food they ate..."

A very short video introduction to how photosynthesis cycles energy through an ecosystem and a "real-world" application of ratios! Lindsay Hollister, JPPM's horticulturalist, taps a black walnut tree for its sap and park staff boil it down to create syrup. Included in this video are an animated food web showing the directions of energy flow during photosynthesis and when sap is "rising," which can be extended by students to include humans or more parts of their local ecosystem. Use the video as an introduction to activities about sugar and biological storage, and an excuse to sample maple syrup to taste the sugar. Alternatively, research trees nearby students could help tap and witness the biological transfer of energy themselves.

"These simple tools are transforming how children are treated for acute malnutrition. Designed for people with low literacy, these tools have the potential to help community health workers treat children with severe acute malnutrition close to home, in areas around the world where the nearest health facility is hours away. Malnutrition is the single biggest threat to public health according to the World Health Organization. Globally, it contributes to 45% of deaths of children under 5. Treatment for the most severe cases was, until recently, only available at a hospital as around-the-clock care—which is virtually impossible in many low-income countries. With the development of ready-to-use therapeutic foods, this treatment became available in outpatient programs at lower-level facilities, requiring weekly visits for up to 2-4 months. While this outpatient treatment model has been scaled up to over 60 countries with a high burden of malnutrition, it hasn’t reached every community where it’s needed..."
