A Grammar of Moloko

This grammar provides the first comprehensive grammatical description of Moloko, a Chadic language spoken by about 10,000 speakers in northern Cameroon. The grammar was developed from hours and years that the authors spent at friends’ houses hearing and recording stories, hours spent listening to the tapes and transcribing the stories, then translating them and studying the language through them. Time was spent together and with others speaking the language and talking about it, translating resources and talking to Moloko people about them. Grammar and phonology discoveries were made in the office, in the fields while working, and at gatherings. In the process, the four authors have become more and more passionate about the Moloko language and are eager to share their knowledge about it with others.

A Grammar of Pite Saami

Pite Saami is a highly endangered Western Saami language in the Uralic language family currently spoken by a few individuals in Swedish Lapland. This grammar is the first extensive book-length treatment of a Saami language written in English. While focussing on the morphophonology of the main word classes nouns, adjectives and verbs, it also deals with other linguistic structures such as prosody, phonology, phrase types and clauses. Furthermore, it provides an introduction to the language and its speakers, and an outline of a preliminary Pite Saami orthography. An extensive annotated spoken-language corpus collected over the course of five years forms the empirical foundation for this description, and each example includes a specific reference to the corpus in order to facilitate verification of claims made on the data. Descriptions are presented for a general linguistics audience and without attempting to support a specific theoretical approach, but this book should be equally useful for scholars of Uralic linguistics, typologists, and even learners of Pite Saami.

Grammar to Accompany Deutsch im Blick

This book is a distinctive Grammar edition to “Deutsch im Blick“, an OER textbook housed at the Center for Open Educational Resources and Language Learning (COERLL) at UT Austin and authored by Dr. Zsuzsanna Abrams. This book was developed having in mind university students who speak English as their first language. Although this material was developed for university students, we believe that its content is also applicable to high school students, adolescents, and adults learning German. This Pressbook and “Deutsch im Blick” take the place of a traditional language textbook by providing varied activities that facilitate the students’ progress in linguistic skills and cultural understanding. Our approach to language instruction is interactive, conversational and fundamentally task-based. We see grammar as a means for enabling effective communication, which is why our explanations of grammar are concise and not overly technical.

This book introduces formal grammar theories that play a role in current linguistic theorizing (Phrase Structure Grammar, Transformational Grammar/Government & Binding, Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar, Lexical Functional Grammar, Categorial Grammar, Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar, Construction Grammar, Tree Adjoining Grammar). The key assumptions are explained and it is shown how the respective theory treats arguments and adjuncts, the active/passive alternation, local reorderings, verb placement, and fronting of constituents over long distances. The analyses are explained with German as the object language.

This textbook -- written by a group of select experts with a focus on different aspects of the design process, from creation to production -- addresses the many steps of creating and then producing physical, printed, or other imaged products that people interact with on a daily basis. It covers the concept that, while most modern graphic design is created on computers using design software, the ideas and concepts don’t stay on the computer. The ideas need to be completed in the computer software, then progress to an imaging (traditionally referred to as printing) process. Keywords are highlighted throughout and summarized in a Glossary at the end of the book, and each chapter includes exercises and suggested readings.

Short Description:

Long Description:
This textbook is written by a group of select experts with a focus on different aspects of the design process, from creation to production. Traditionally referred to as graphic design, communication design is the process by which messages and images are used to convey information to a targeted audience. It is within this spectrum that this textbook addresses the many steps of creating and then producing physical, printed, or other imaged products that people interact with on a daily basis. Design itself is only the first step. It is important when conceiving of a new design that the entire workflow through to production is taken into consideration. And while most modern graphic design is created on computers, using design software such as the Adobe suite of products, the ideas and concepts don’t stay on the computer. To create in-store signage, for instance, the ideas need to be completed in the computer software, then progress to an imaging (traditionally referred to as printing) process. This is a very wide-reaching and varied group of disciplines.

Each chapter begins with a list of Learning Objectives, and concludes with Exercises and a list of Suggested Readings on the Summary page. Throughout, key terms are noted in bold and listed again in a Glossary at the end of the book.

Digitally accessible, visually appealing courses

Short Description:
This book was written to help educators and instructional designers to design visually appealing courses (and curricular materials) that are also digitally accessible. I argue that applying graphic design principles reduces barriers, lowers cognitive load, and improves learning. I created the Graphic Design E-Learning Checklist to help instructional designers improve the look and feel of their courses while designing for inclusivity at the forefront.

Long Description:
In Graphic Design for Course Creators you will read about how to use and apply graphic design theory to improve the look, feel, and usability of your courses. You will also learn how to improve the digital accessibility of your courses while making strong design choices backed by learning science. For example, by learning the differences between images that aid in instruction and those considered seductive details, you will improve the learning experience of your students. Additionally, tips on selecting and combining colors will help you communicate appropriately while learning how to use color contrast will ensure more learners can access the materials created. Graphic Design for Course Creators contains checklists and questions to review for every chapter so that you can confidently make design choices your educational stakeholders will love.

Introduction to Marketing Principles

Short Description:
This is a resource to teach students the foundational principles of marketing. This open textbook uses current case studies and engaging, real-world scenarios to help students recognize and analyze marketing in business as well as in everyday life.

Long Description:
Marketing is a fundamental aspect of any business, organization, or individual seeking to communicate value to their target audience. The principles of marketing involve understanding customer needs and wants, developing products and services that meet those needs, promoting them effectively, and creating long-term relationships with customers. This textbook aims to provide undergraduate students with a comprehensive introduction to marketing and its key concepts.

The first section of the textbook will focus on the fundamental principles of marketing, including the marketing mix (product, price, promotion, and place), market segmentation, and consumer behavior. Students will learn how to analyze consumer needs and preferences and how to design effective marketing strategies to meet those needs.

The second section of the textbook will cover key marketing tools and techniques, including advertising, public relations, sales promotions, personal selling, and digital marketing. Students will learn how to identify the most effective marketing channels for their target audience and how to measure the success of their marketing efforts.

The final section of the textbook will explore contemporary issues in marketing, including ethical considerations, global marketing, and the impact of new technologies and social media on marketing practices.

By the end of this textbook, students will have a solid understanding of the principles of marketing and the tools and techniques necessary to develop effective marketing strategies in a constantly changing business landscape.

Greek and Latin Roots: Part II - Greek
Unrestricted Use
CC BY
Rating

Greek and Latin Roots: Part II - Greek is part two of a two part series. This series examines the systematic principles by which a large portion of English vocabulary has evolved from Latin and (to a lesser degree) from Greek. This book focuses on Greek roots. A link to the first part focusing on the Latin roots can be found below. Part II will try to impart some skill in the recognition and proper use of words derived from Greek. There is a stress on principles: although students will be continually looking at interesting individual words, their constant aim will be to discover predictable general patterns of historical development, so that they may be able to cope with new and unfamiliar words of any type that they have studied. They will be shown how to approach the problem by a procedure known as “word analysis,” which is roughly comparable to the dissection of an interesting specimen in the biology laboratory. The text assumes no previous knowledge of Greek, and does not involve the grammatical study of this language—except for a few basic features of noun and verb formation that will help students to understand the Greek legacy in English. All students will be asked to learn the Greek alphabet. This skill is not absolutely essential for a general knowledge of Greek roots in English. However, it will help students understand a number of otherwise puzzling features of spelling and usage. Although there will be some attention paid to the historical interaction of Greek with English, this text is definitely not a systematic history of the English language. It focuses on only those elements within English that have been directly or indirectly affected by this classical language. In order to provide the broadest possible service to students, the text emphasizes standard English vocabulary in current use. The more exotic technical vocabulary of science and medicine can be extremely interesting, but is explored in only summary fashion. Nevertheless, this text should be of considerable value, say, to a would-be botanist or medical doctor, if only by providing the foundation for further specialized enquiry.
