This lesson offers an understanding of the historic and economic implications of the livestock industry to our state and nation. Learners will recognize the best management practices for specific food animal species, as well as identify the important breeds of each species. This represents a portion of the Introduction to Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources (AFNR) series in Nebraska middle and high school agricultural education.

The unit is designed to be completed in six or more sessions. The comprehensive curriculum materials contain information for teachers, including activity tips and an overview of the many varied reasons that plant life flourishes in one plot but not another. Students speculate on why plants are more abundant in some areas of the site than others. They list factors that might account for the differences, such as temperature, humidity, light, soil, rainfall, wind, and human or animal activity, and figure out how they can collect more data on these factors. They discuss why it might be important to take a count of all the individual plants in each plot and develop a plan for conducting the field study. A reading selection describes how scientists count plants and gives students tips for conducting their own survey. Students then count plants and record their data. Several optional activities are provided.

This article, part of Biodiversity Counts, examines site preservation, focusing on a new national park in El Salvador. The article discusses the questions faced as part of the decision-making process, the formation of an advisory committee in the early 1990s to study the park and make recommendations for how it should be managed, the committee's recommendations, and a description of those changes that are in the works, such as opening a portion of the park to the public.

This OLogy board game is a fun-filled way to help kids understand that once a species is extinct, it's gone forever and that there are lots of things they can do to help preserve biodiversity. The activity begins by introducing kids to the difference between endangered and extinct animals, as well as to the U.S. Endangered Species Act. A colorful game board is included as a printable PDF file. You'll need a pair of dice and a marker of your choosing for each player. Simple directions for assembling the game board and playing the game are included on a single page.

This activity describes the flow of carbon in the environment and focuses on how much carbon is stored in trees. It goes on to have students analyze data and make calculations about the amount of carbon stored in a set of trees at three sites in a wooded area that were to be cut down to build a college dormitory.

In this introductory unit, students will learn about the fundamental role of observation by viewing photographs of both agricultural and non-agricultural (natural) landscapes and making independent observations. They will learn how to relate physiographic features to land use by drawing conclusions about how the physiography of the land affects or is affected by various land use practices. They will then discuss their observations in small groups, organize their thoughts, and explain their conclusions in a classroom oral presentation. Finally, students will consider landscape features in the context of Earth systems and discuss how these systems are impacted by human activity.
