Trading on equity occurs when a company incurs new debt (such as from bonds, loans, or preferred stock) to acquire assets on which it can earn a return greater than the interest cost of the debt. If a company generates a profit through this financing technique, its shareholders earn a greater return on their investments. In this case, trading on equity is successful. If the company earns less from the acquired assets than the cost of the debt, its shareholders earn a reduced return because of this activity. Doing this is essential for supporting trans and gender diverse students and educating everyone about these identities. This resource is a guide on how to make OER more inclusive and representative of trans and gender diverse people. It is intended to be easily incorporated into a scholarly communications course, while also being valuable to faculty and others interested in learning about the topic and how to make changes to their own course materials.

This Lesson Plan was created by Molly Simpson. The attached Lesson Plan is designed for Grade 3 English Language Arts students. Students will understand and use 3rd grade level vocabulary, use creative thinking skills to write a short story, proofread and edit their own work, and publish a final copy of their written work. The Lesson Plan addresses the following NDE Standards: NE.LA 3.2.1.D, NE.LA 3.2.1.H, NE.LA 3.2.1.J, and NE.LA 3.2.2.D. It is expected that this Lesson Plan will take students about 120 minutes to complete. 

This activity is part of a larger module that introduces students to two different ways to model chemical diffusion in minerals: 1) 1D diffusion in Excel using finite differences and 2) 1D diffusion in MATLAB using the same equations. It is designed to help students apply diffusion equations derived previously in class to understand natural zonation of elements in minerals. The students build the model first in Excel, and then in MATLAB to obtain the timescales of diffusive re-equilibration related to magma storage and transport at KÃÂlauea Volcano, Hawai'i. The major goals are to help students transition from visual platforms (e.g., Excel) to writing computer code (e.g., in MATLAB), implementing for loops for iterative calculations, and thinking about how the geologic parameters (temperature, pressure, fO2) affect the model results.
