The Third Grade Elementary Framework for Science and Integrated Subjects, Weather, uses the phenomena of extreme weather events.  It is part of Elementary Framework for Science and Integrated Subjects project, a statewide Clime Time collaboration among ESD 123, ESD 105, North Central ESD, and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. Development of the resources is in response to a need for research- based science lessons for elementary teachers that are integrated with English language arts, mathematics and other subjects such as social studies. The template for Elementary Science and Integrated Subjects  can serve as an organized, coherent and research-based roadmap for teachers in the development of their own NGSS aligned science lessons.  Lessons can also be useful for classrooms that have no adopted curriculum as well as to serve as enhancements for  current science curriculum. The EFSIS project brings together grade level teams of teachers to develop lessons or suites of lessons that are 1) pnenomena based, focused on grade level Performance Expectations, and 2) leverage ELA and Mathematics Washington State Learning Standards.

Tolerance-Why are we as a people so intolerant of others whether from the present, past or future?Students will have the ability to identify injustices that have been committed throughout the world. Whether this is of recent origin in society or it is remnants from World Wars, you will identify the intolerance and educate the reader throughout your Research Paper. Throughout this semester the theme of this class has been intolerance. We have discussed this in our classes, on paper with discussion questions and by watching videos. Now you will have a chance to select your topic and arrive upon a thesis that will engage and answer the questions that you have about the intolerance of the world and its' people.

This Remote Learning Plan was created by Joanna Pruitt as part of the 2020 ESU-NDE Remote Learning Plan Project. Educators worked with coaches to create Remote Learning Plans as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.*I have remixed this lesson to use for a 9-12 grade research paper class. The only changes I made were to break it up into smaller sections (Topic Selection and Brainstorming) in order to fit it into our course schedule.

Two possible ways to prevent hepatitis C infection from causing chronic liver disease

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Chronic infection with the hepatitis C virus is a major cause of chronic liver disease, even after the virus has been eradicated by antiviral treatment. The problem appears to lie in the lingering activation of harmful Wnt/β-catenin signaling, which active viruses exploit for replication. A new study suggests the enzyme PKA could play a role. PKA is part of a signaling cascade that is activated during hepatitis C infection. To determine its role, researchers prevented PKA activation by treating cells with a PKA inhibitor. Inhibition was found to be beneficial. Inhibiting PKA reduced cells’ capacity to support both the hepatitis C virus and Wnt/β-catenin signaling, as mediated by another enzyme, GSK-3β. Interestingly, similar benefits were observed when another harmful effect of viral infection was repressed, namely, endoplasmic reticulum stress..."

Geoffrey Kenmuir - Passaic County Community College. This assignment prepares first-year students to perform academic research. Specifically, by working with a complex text such as the US Constitution, they will be required to write summaries (articles), paraphrases (definitions), and create a Works Cited Page that adheres to MLA standards. By developing these fundamental skills they will have an opportunity to self-assess their abilities, and realize which research skills are lacking, and which are strong.

Unravelling the interplay between YAP and IGF-1R signaling in breast cancer cells

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"The hormone and receptor pair IGF-1 and IGF-1R and the Hippo-YAP signaling pathway are critical to breast cancer stem cells, but if or how these pathways interact in these cells remained unclear. So, researchers recently examined YAP and IGF-1R in triple negative breast cancer cell lines and xenograft models. YAP knockdown reduced viability and stemness in cell culture and tumorigenicity in vivo, suggesting that YAP contributes to stemness in breast cancer cells. Further tests determined that IGF-1R regulated YAP expression, and in turn, YAP regulated IGF-1 expression but not IGF-1R. Specifically, depleting IGF-1R decreased YAP expression, while addition of IGF-1 upregulated YAP and increased its nuclear localization. YAP overexpression increased IGF-1 expression without impacting IGF-1R expression. In clinical data from basal-like breast cancer patients, higher levels of YAP and IGF-1 are correlated with shorter overall survival..."

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Aspergillus fumigatus infection is difficult to diagnose and can develop into a dangerous condition called invasive pulmonary aspergillosis. The spores (conidia) from A. fumigatus are common in the air but normally our lung structure and immune system are protective. But events and illnesses that interrupt our immune system or damage our lungs can increase the risk of infection. Radiotherapy is one such event and its widespread application has increased the incidence of A. fumigatus infections. but the exact mechanism is poorly understood. A recent study in mice found that radiation destroyed the pulmonary epithelial barrier and increased the burden of A. fumigatus in the lungs. Further experiments determined that NLRP3 inflammasome signaling was triggering pyroptosis of the lung epithelial cells. Pyroptosis is a highly inflammatory type of programmed cell death where the cell bursts. Knocking out the gene for NLRP3 blocked pyroptosis, reduced the damage to the epithelial barrier, and reduced the A..."

Using Publicly Available Data to Engage IV-E Students in Research and Statistics: Instructional Modules.

Increasingly, public agencies are adopting models of self-assessment in which administrative data are used to guide and then continuously evaluate the implementation of programs and policies. In California, public child welfare agencies track performance outcomes spanning a range of child safety, permanency, and well-being domains, as dictated by federal and state mandates. This curriculum has been designed to provide Title IV-E and others students interested in public child welfare systems with an overview of the state’s Child Welfare Outcomes and Accountability System. Students will be provided with hands-on opportunities to become experienced and “statistically literate” users of aggregate, public child welfare data from the state’s administrative child welfare system, attending to the often missing link between data/research and practice. This curriculum is organized into five teaching modules, providing instructors with student learning activities, PowerPoint slide presentations, and other materials to support graduate IV-E students in the development of practical data analysis skills. Materials focus on publicly available data hosted through the Child Welfare Indicators Project at the University of California at Berkeley, a long-standing agency/university data partnership: http://cssr.berkeley.edu/ucb_childwelfare. CalSWEC funding for the development of this curriculum was provided to the Child Welfare Performance Indicators Project. Modules were developed to support instructors of both first- and second-year MSW research courses. Module objectives include: (a) to support student (and instructor) understanding of California's child welfare system performance goals and progress to date; (b) to develop students who have highly desirable (and practical) data analysis skills, including the ability to intelligibly distill and present numerical findings; and (c) to prepare a cohort of IV-E MSW students equipped to adopt leadership roles in county child welfare agencies, bringing with them an appreciation for how data can be used to improve practice and inform policies. Putnam-Hornstein, E., Needell, B., Lery, B., King, B., & Weigmann, W.
