Ansel Adams's Photographs of Japanese-American Internment at Manzanar
Unrestricted Use

In 1943, Ansel Adams (1902-1984), America's best-known photographer, documented the Manzanar War Relocation Center in California and the Japanese Americans interned there during World War II. The collection presents for the first time side-by-side digital scans of both Adams's 242 original negatives and his 209 photographic prints, allowing viewers to see his darkroom technique and in particular how he cropped his prints. Adams's Manzanar work is a departure from his signature style of landscape photography. Although a majority of the photographs are portraits, the images also include views of daily life, agricultural scenes, and sports and leisure activities.

In July 2008, Riverbend Public Schools (RPS) in Western Michigan and Grand Valley State University (GVSU) received a grant from the Wallace Foundation that supported the development of a specialized educational leadership program. The project was designed to customize an existing degree program in the university’s College of Education, focusing on leadership skill sets for urban school leaders. The project, titled the “Aspiring Leaders Program,” allowed 34 urban teachers and new principals to obtain a master’s degree in educational leadership or an educational specialist degree in educational leadership with special expertise in urban schools. The program ran from November 2008 through the fall semester of 2009. In the late fall of 2009 and again in 2012, follow-up studies were conducted to determine if this customized program had benefited the participants and if they continued to use the skill sets they had been taught. This study describes the 2012 three-year follow-up study and discusses its results.

Antarctic Expedition

Antarctic Expedition involves a multi-issue negotiation between two university professors over resources for a proposed joint expedition to the Antarctic. Antarctic Expedition encompasses key negotiation concepts such as the best alternative to a negotiated agreement (BATNA), the worst alternative to a negotiated agreement (WATNA) and the zone of possible agreement (ZOPA). Students are also invited to examine the role of principled negotiation, and the applicability of standards and criteria. This simulation has been designed for third level students studying negotiation. Whilst it can be used at an introductory level, it is suggested that it is most appropriate for students who have already been introduced to fundamental negotiation concepts.Teaching Notes include General Instructions, Confidential Instructions for Andy Balfe and Confidential Instructions for Gerry Hopkins.
