Teacher will demonstrate the SeisMac program.

Shake the laptop in the three different directions, showing how the different directions are recorded on the three different components.
Adjust both the vertical and horizontal scales to show how the same motions can be represented differently.
Setting the vertical scales on -1 to +1, tilt the laptop 90 deg in each of the three directions to demonstrate that the seismograms are records of acceleration (accelerograms). When the laptop is oriented normally, the baseline of the vertical component is 1 g and the two horizontal components have baselines of 0 g. However, when the laptop is tilted the vertical component goes to 0 g and one of the horizontal components will go to 1 g.

Teacher will present real 3-component seismograms for actual data, and discuss the major seismic phases (P, S, Love, Rayleigh), showing the components they arrive on: P is primarily on vertical, S is primarily on radial and transverse, Love is primarily on the transverse, and the Rayleigh wave is primarily on both vertical and radial components.
Students will take turns shaking the seismometer to try to directly replicate the actual seismograms. If two sets of seismograms are used, the teacher can talk about the differences between seismograms at stations that are nearer or further from the seismometer. Students consider human senses and the many everyday human-made sensors so common in their lives. They learn about the three components of biosensors—a special type of sensor—and their functions and importance. With this understanding, students identify various organs in the human body that behave as sensors, such as the pancreas. Using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT robots, provided rbt robot programs and LEGO sensors (light, ultrasonic, sound, touch), students gain first-hand experience with sensors and come to see how engineer-designed sensors play important roles in our daily lives, informing people of their surroundings and ultimately improving our quality of life.

Seven Easy Steps to Open Science

The open science movement is rapidly changing the scientific landscape. Because exact definitions are often lacking and reforms are constantly evolving, accessible guides to open science are needed. This paper provides an introduction to open science and related reforms in the form of an annotated reading list of seven peer-reviewed articles, following the format of Etz, Gronau, Dablander, Edelsbrunner, and Baribault (2018). Written for researchers and students – particularly in psychological science – it highlights and introduces seven topics: understanding open science; open access; open data, materials, and code; reproducible analyses; preregistration and registered reports; replication research; and teaching open science. For each topic, we provide a detailed summary of one particularly informative and actionable article and suggest several further resources. Supporting a broader understanding of open science issues, this overview should enable researchers to engage with, improve, and implement current open, transparent, reproducible, replicable, and cumulative scientific practices.

The Shallow and the Deep: A biased introduction to neural networks and old school machine learning

The Shallow and the Deep is a collection of lecture notes that offers an accessible introduction to neural networks and machine learning in general. However, it was clear from the beginning that these notes would not be able to cover this rapidly changing and growing field in its entirety. The focus lies on classical machine learning techniques, with a bias towards classification and regression. Other learning paradigms and many recent developments in, for instance, Deep Learning are not addressed or only briefly touched upon.

Biehl argues that having a solid knowledge of the foundations of the field is essential, especially for anyone who wants to explore the world of machine learning with an ambition that goes beyond the application of some software package to some data set. Therefore, The Shallow and the Deep places emphasis on fundamental concepts and theoretical background. This also involves delving into the history and pre-history of neural networks, where the foundations for most of the recent developments were laid. These notes aim to demystify machine learning and neural networks without losing the appreciation for their impressive power and versatility.

A digital signal processing (DSP) textbook, and other materials, aimed at computer science students. Why one specifically for CS students? DSP has traditionally been taught as part of the electrical engineering curriculum and, as such, is accessible to CS students only to the extent that they have taken its prerequisites. In some engineering schools, that may be the case, but it is often the case that the CS math curriculum lacks some of the expected prerequisites. Moreover, DSP is most often taught as an upper-level EE course, and therefore, practically speaking, inaccessible to most non-EE majors.

TEXTBOOK ABSTRACT:

This book is intended for use in teaching undergraduate courses on
continuous-time and/or discrete-time signals and systems in engineering
(and related) disciplines. It provides a detailed introduction to
continuous-time and discrete-time signals and systems, with a focus on both
theory and applications. The mathematics underlying signals and systems is
presented, including topics such as: signal properties, elementary signals,
system properties, continuous-time and discrete-time linear time-invariant
systems, convolution, continuous-time and discrete-time Fourier series, the
continuous-time and discrete-time Fourier transforms, frequency spectra,
and the bilateral and unilateral Laplace and z transforms. Applications
of the theory are also explored, including: filtering, equalization,
amplitude modulation, sampling, feedback control systems, circuit analysis,
Laplace-domain techniques for solving differential equations, and z-domain
techniques for solving difference equations. Other supplemental material
is also included, such as: a detailed introduction to MATLAB, a review
of complex analysis, an introduction to partial fraction expansions, an
exploration of time-domain techniques for solving differential equations,
and information on online video-lecture content for material covered in
the book. Throughout the book, many worked-through examples are provided.
Problem sets are also provided for each major topic covered.

LECTURE SLIDES ABSTRACT:

This document constitutes a detailed set of lecture slides on signals and
systems, covering both the continuous-time and discrete-time cases. Some of
the topics considered include: signal properties, elementary signals, system
properties, linear time-invariant systems, convolution, Fourier series,
Fourier transform, Laplace transform, z transform, complex analysis, and
partial fraction expansions.

SOLUTIONS MANUAL ABSTRACT:

This book presents complete solutions for all of the exercises appearing
in the textbook "Signals and Systems". Each exercise from the textbook is
given along with a detailed solution.

Given the high prevalence of disability worldwide, the status of disabled people remains an area of concern for practitioners who seek to respectfully engage with a stigmatized and often oppressed population. The book encourages practitioners to draw on intersectionality theory, the critical cultural competence framework and anti-oppressive practice approaches to contend with the concerns facing disabled people today. These issues include parenting, mass incarceration, ableism, aging and employment, among others. This title acknowledges difference and multisystemic privilege and oppression while also drawing readers’ attention to the importance of solidarity and allyship when it comes to meaningful social work practice with and social change for disabled people.
