This course examines alternative conceptions and theoretical underpinnings of sustainable development. Syllabus: Gender, violence, and social change

This is an eight-week syllabus for upper-undergraduate and postgraduate students. It aims to give students an advanced grounding in the political sociology of gender and violence, exploring how gender-based violence operates within the intersecting systems of heteropatriarchy and colonial racial capitalism and engaging in critical conversations about how initiatives to end gender-based violence can dismantle oppressive systems rather than strengthening them.

The resource consists of a reading list, discussion prompts for teaching sessions and multimedia links, in PDF format. The text of this case is a transcript of a story broadcast on NPR's All Things Considered on January 22, 1996. The story concerns Congressional debate about agricultural programs, particularly the price support program for peanuts. The story includes statements from a member of Congress as well as representatives of peanut growers and peanut processors. The peanut program includes import restrictions, a price floor and peanut growing licenses, and this case describes those and includes statements from peanut growers, processors and consumers.

This case is the transcript of the 1962 Congressional Testimony of BC Deuschle, President of the Scissors, Shears and Manicure Implement Manufacturers' Association, with regard to the Trade Expansion Act of 1962. Deuschle opposes the act, fearing that reduced protection will destroy his industry. The case includes all of the classic economic and political motives for protection.

Aim is to analyze important current events for what they reveal about the nature and working of our technological world. Starting point is connection between technology and terrorism. Subject also explores how a human-built world can foster insecurity and danger, and how human beings respond. Many invited guests help develop a strong interdisciplinary approach (science, engineering, social science, humanities). Topics include technological risk and remediation, sociotechnical systems, imagination of disaster, technology and identity, technology and religion, technology and education, and technology and trust. Written and oral assignments and a final project required. Service-learning proposals and web-based presentations, in addition to written work, may be considered for the final project by the instructor.
