Students experiment with a new material—aerogel. Aerogel is a synthetic (human-made) porous ultra-light (low-density) material, in which the liquid component of a gel is replaced with a gas. In this activity, student pairs use aerogel to simulate the environmental engineering application of cleaning up oil spills. In a simple and fun way, this activity incorporates density calculations, the material effects of surface area, and hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties.

This is a research project designed for 3-5th grade using digital resources to research various famous African Americans from both the past and the present.  It incorporates data collection and presentation using a variety of materials.  Presentation options could vary depending on grade level and material accessability.

The initiative addresses the dire shortage of children’s storybooks in African languages, crucial for children’s literacy development.

This is an activity that can be done after the reading of Number the Stars. It's a lesson plan that will allow them to research what actually happened during the Holocaust to the Jews that were caught, luckily, unlike Annemarie's friend.I have also included the website to the LiveBinders binder that I made to go alongside with the lesson plan. It has websites about the Holocaust if you want to have the students all visiting the same sites. There are also a varying amount of questions that go along with each website in the binder.

In this activity about light and perception, learners discover how a flash of light can create a lingering image called an "afterimage" on the retina of the eye. Learners will be surprised when they continue to see an image of a bright object after staring at it and looking away. Use this activity to introduce learners to principles of optics and perception as well as to explain why the full moon often appears larger when it is on the horizon than when it is overhead. After the Ice: Our Food discusses changes in historic food sources for Arctic Native Americans. Global climate change is altering yearly cycles of both ice coverage and depth in the Bering Sea. Changes in the ice affect the way local native groups hunt in order to feed their community.

This 7-minute video illustrates how the historic homeland for Arctic Native Americans is being affected by climate change. Shorefast ice and pack ice are present for a shorter part of the year. This has profound affects on the way of life in the Bering Sea region, to the point where the community may have to relocate.

All biological cells require the transport of materials across the plasma membrane into and out of the cell. By infusing cubes of agar with a pH indicator, and then soaking the treated cubes in vinegar, you can model how diffusion occurs in cells. Then, by observing cubes of different sizes, you can discover why larger cells might need extra help to transport materials.

Agree or Disagree? asks students to demonstrate their argumentative and comparative writing skills.

Students learn about economic costs and benefits and cultural costs and benefits. By practicing cost-benefit analysis, students discover that decision making is a complex task.
