In this activity, students act as environmental engineers involved with the clean up of a toxic spill. Using bioremediation as the process, students select which bacteria they will use to eat up the pollutant spilled. Students learn how engineers use bioremediation to make organism degrade harmful chemicals. Engineers must make sure bacteria have everything they need to live and degrade contaminants for bioremediation to happen. Students learn about the needs of living things by setting up an experiment with yeast. The scientific method is reinforced as students must design the experiment themselves making sure they include a control and complete parts of a formal lab report.

A man in his forties with a history of basal cell carcinoma of the nose and a benign neoplasm of the jaw, status post resection with mandibular reconstruction, presented for routine follow-up. On chest x-ray workup, he was found to have numerous bilateral pulmonary nodules that were highly suspicious for a metastatic disease. A follow-up CT scan of the chest with contrast showed eight small round pulmonary nodules measuring few millimeters in size and a larger left lower lobe pulmonary mass measuring 3.0 x 3.1 cm in size. There was no evidence of hilar or mediastinal lymphadenopathy and no pleural nodularity or effusion on imaging.

Statistics are not an end in themselves but they are a means to an end, the end being to draw certain conclusions from them. This has to be done very carefully, otherwise misleading conclusions may be drawn and the whole purpose of doing research may get vitiated. A researcher/statistician besides the collection and analysis of data, has to draw inferences and explain their significance. Through interpretation the meanings and implications of the study become clear. Analysis is not complete without interpretation, and interpretation can not proceed without analysis. Both are, thus, inter-dependent. In this unit, therefore, we will discuss the interpretation of analysed data, summarizing the interpretation and statistical fallacies.

This is an activity about image comparison. Learners will analyze and compare two sets of images of the Sun taken by instruments on the Solar Dynamics Observatory spacecraft. With Set 1, they will observe the Sun in both a highly active and a minimally active state, and be able to detect active regions and loops on the Sun by comparing the two images. With Set 2, they will identify areas of high magnetic activity on a magnetogram image and recognize that these areas correspond to highly active regions on the Sun.
