Put Yourself in a Safe Place: Engaging the Imagination

Objectives:
The participants will:
1. Focus and visualize on a “safe place”
2. Use art and art elements to create a symbolic place where they feel safe and use this place for visualization and calming

Audience:
This activity was designed for use with children but could easily be adapted to any age of individual who has experienced trauma and wants to symbolically gain a safe place.

This Remote Learning Plan was created by Candace Thompson in collaboration with Nick Ziegler as part of the 2019-20 ESU-NDE Digital Age Pedagogy Project. Educators worked with coaches to create Remote Learning Plans as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The attached Remote Learning Plan is designed for grade 2 students in a Technology class. Students will create a digital composition using Microsoft Paint to explain what COVID-19 means to them.

This lesson is mid-way through my Line Dance Unit. During this lesson, students will find a pre-choreographed line dance, learn it, present it, and teach it to the class.

Highlighting the film, Girl Rising, this curriculum seeks to examine the barriers that prevent children, specifically girls, from accessing education. The curriculum engages students in a critical discussion of: "How do we, as youth, create solutions to overcome the challenges of access to education?"

This is a lesson plan with short video clips and a variety of classroom activities used to engage students.
