Short Description: Based on over 20 years of teaching experience in animal nutrition, this study guide will enhance learning basic food animal nutritional principles. In this introductory text, six fundamental nutrients, their structure, digestion, and metabolism are covered. A brief introduction to bioenergetics, feed additives, nutrient analysis, digestive organs and processes in monogastric and ruminant animals, and methods for assessing nutrient utilization are also included. Each chapter is illustrated with a new terms box, key points, and review questions. This study guide is an essential learning tool for undergraduate students majoring in animal sciences, veterinary medicine, or other related disciplines. Data dashboard

In this role-playing activity, learners are presented with a scenario in which they determine whether the Gulf Stream is responsible for keeping northern Europe warm. They must also address the potential future of the Gulf Stream if polar ice were to continue melting. The students work in small groups to identify the issue, discuss the problem, and develop a problem statement. They are then asked what they need to know to solve the problem.

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:
"Feed efficiency is an important economic and environmental parameter in raising swine. It captures how effectively livestock feed is turned into food products for humans. Increasing a pig’s feed efficiency can reduce a farm’s costs and energy use. A new study shows that one factor that could affect pigs’ feed efficiency is their gut microbiome. Feed intake and body weight measurements showed significant differences in feed efficiency among three pig breeds: Duroc, Landrace, and Large White, while genetic analyses of their gut microbiomes revealed differences in their microbial makeup. Association analyses between these datasets indicated a positive association between 4 types of bacteria and feed efficiency. This link could help both scientists and farmers understand how intestinal microbes influence animal traits crucial to production. such as those related to fatness. And it could offer a valuable new way to influence the feed efficiency of pigs..."

In this interactive game, students solve challenges that their community faces during the course of an extreme drought event by using available individual and community resources. Students work in three resilience teams to determine the strategies that they will invest in as a community as the drought situation evolves.

This course is an introductory survey of world history. It will offer a historical overview of major processes and interactions in the development of human society since the emergence in Africa of Homo sapiens, or modern humans, some 200,000 years ago. The course should enable students to treat world history as an approach to the past that addresses large-scale patterns as well as local narratives, and though which they can pursue their interest in various types of knowledge.

The marine environment is unique and requires technologies that can use sound to gather information since there is little light underwater. The sea-floor is characterized using underwater sound and acoustical systems. Current technological innovations are allowing scientists to further understand and apply information about animal locations and habitat. Remote sensing and exploration with underwater vehicles allows scientists to map and understand the sea floor, and in some cases, the water column. In this lesson, the students will be shown benthic habitat images produced by GIS. These imaged will lead to a class discussion on why habitat mapping is useful and how current technology works to make bathymetry mapping possible. The teacher will then ask inquiry-based questions to have students brainstorm about the importance of bathymetry mapping.

"Producing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) is one of our gut microbiota’s key roles. These microbes primarily produce SCFAs from dietary fiber; then the SCFAs reduce inflammation and promote gastrointestinal barrier integrity. The impact of supplemental dietary fiber, or prebiotics, varies among individuals. Is this because individuals respond differently to different prebiotics? Or does a given person respond to various prebiotics similarly? A recent study examined this question using a crossover study in healthy adults. Metabolic responses to the three prebiotics were similar within each individual, and a major determinant of SCFA response was individual identity. Further, higher habitual fiber consumption was associated with elevated basal fecal SCFA concentrations, which was then associated with a smaller prebiotic response. The same effect was seen in culture-based experiments: the participant's microbial SCFA production capacity was negatively associated with their habitual fiber consumption..."
