The materials here were selected for ESOL learners who have intermediate-high intermediate writing skills and are starting more "academic" levels of course work in order to transition into college-level composition courses.

This is a brand new complete free English pronunciation course in the public domain. The main aim is to teach learners how to use connected speech in English. The course uses PowerPoint slides, MP3 audio files, interactive comprehension quizzes, discussion questions, practice activities, and links to further helpful resources.

The aims of the course are to:

- understand what connected speech is and why it is important
- be able to perform the four main actions of connected speech
- learn and practice the little-known techniques of connected speech
- feel more confident in using spoken English to communicate daily
- better understand native speakers when they speak English

This course outline is designed for a Level 5 Intermediate Communication course at Portland Community College. It addresses listening, speaking, pronunciation, and presentation skills within the theme of career exploration drawing on some materials adapted from Oregon Career Information System.

The curriculum is designed for a course that is 10 weeks long. Each class period is two hours long, and the class meets twice weekly for a total of 20 class periods plus final exam. During the course, students complete several projects:
a survey that they report in small groups
a speech that they give to the whole class
a video presentation that they share online
a job interview as part of their final exam

This activity deals with the concept of rhyming. This concept is not immediately understood by most students and needs to be explained first with ample examples. The activity consists of groups of 3 words two of which rhyme and one doesn't. Students read the words or listen to the instructor and select the word that doesn't rhyme. They are then directed to pick a specific letter from the "wrong" word and write it in a separate column. After completing the assignment students unscramble the letters trying to form a meaningful expression related to listening which in this case is "I'm all ears".

This is an intermediate integrated-skills module for English language learners. The module has three chapters on the theme "People and Places," which is equivalent to approximately 4 weeks of material for a 9 unit community college course. The module has materials to learn and practice all of the necessary language skills at the intermediate level. Academic language skills include reading, writing, listening, speaking, vocabulary, grammar, and rhetorical analysis.

ESOL Reading Level 8 ESOL 260

This advanced academic reading curriculum for English language learners features eight units, each focusing on a different reading skill. Each unit includes presentation slides with a graphic organizer for taking notes; two readings with comprehension questions; academic vocabulary exercises of terms drawn from the readings; and an extension activity. Materials include student textbook, teacher textbook (with answer key and Quizlet links), and presentation slides.

Course Description
Presents reading as a process that involves determination of purpose, selection and adjustment of strategies, analysis and reflection of underlying meanings, and integration of prior knowledge with new knowledge to address the purpose. Covers content comprehension, textual analysis, critical thinking skills, study skills, and language analysis at the high advanced level. Includes reading diverse texts for a variety of purposes. Includes finding themes and main ideas, analyzing figurative language, summarizing, paraphrasing, evaluating sources and analyzing arguments, inferencing, and using context clues, word forms and common affixes. Prerequisites: ESOL placement test OR successful completion of ESOL 250 AND concurrent enrollment in or completion of (ESOL 252 and ESOL 254) or placement into (ESOL 262 and ESOL 264).
