"Dr. Dey and his team from India have found a rather extraordinary use for an otherwise ordinary material. They’ve developed a supercapacitor capable of storing nearly one-third as much energy as an alkaline battery using peanut shells. A much cheaper and safer alternative to the toxic materials found in most energy storage devices, peanut shells could be a welcome ingredient that powers our increasingly electronic world. Peanut shells aren’t inherently good at storing charge. But locked inside their complex carbon-based structure is the potential to extract a valuable “wonder material” that is: graphene. And yet, it remains very hard to predict monsoons early and accurately. European researchers have now devised a new way to estimate the monsoon season in India. This innovative approach uses a rare isotope, beryllium-seven.The forecasts are not only more accurate than traditional methods, but also available earlier, which could give governments and residents more time to prepare. This unusual weather-tracking approach works because of how air circulates on Earth. Each hemisphere features three large-scale patterns, or cells: the Hadley, Ferrel, and polar cells. Where two cells meet is a convergence zone. Monsoons --seasonal shifts in wind that trigger heavy rain --happen at the intertropical convergence zone, or ITCZ. Worldwide, women are influencing businesses and economies on an unprecedented scale. WIDE ANGLE's '1-800-INDIA' (2005) and 'Pickles, Inc.' (2005) give us insight into two instances of economic and social shifts being wrought by the entry of women into local and international economies. In this lesson, students will begin by examining historic photographs to determine how economic roles for women have changed in the United States. They will then look at contemporary examples of women entering the workforce for the first time: in India's outsourcing sector; and in small business in Israel. They will explore how these women's entry into the economic sphere often involves negotiation and the overcoming of obstacles, but can bring about larger social and behavioral changes as well. As a Culminating Activity, students will apply the knowledge gained in this lesson toward a response to a Document-Based Question.

This course is designed to introduce and help students understand the changes and continuities in the lives of women in South Asia from a historical perspective. Using gender as a lens of examining the past, we will examine how politics of race, class, caste and religion affected and continue to impact women in South Asian countries, primarily in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. We will reflect upon current debates within South Asian women's history in order to examine some of the issues and problems that arise in re-writing the past from a gendered perspective and these are found in primary documents, secondary readings, films, newspaper articles, and the Internet.
