Asian Americans who served in the U.S. military during war in Vietnam were confronted not only by the harsh realities of war, but also with their racial and national identities. Asian American military service officers faced racism from their superiors and fellow U.S. soldiers, and were challenged by Vietnamese citizens and soldiers who saw a connection to them. This lesson explores some of the ways in which Asian Americans in the military experienced the war in Vietnam and the ways they negotiated their identities with being seen by both sides as “foreign invaders.”

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"More than 350 million adult survivors of war throughout the world suffer from post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) and/or major depression Most live in low- and middle-income countries While treating the systemic impact of PTSD in these areas is extremely difficult, effective treatments are available Exposure therapies, such as Narrative Exposure Therapy, can be brief, culturally sensitive and help communities affected by complex traumatic stress Exposure therapy involves imaginatively reliving the life-altering moments leading to a PTSD diagnosis Evidence suggests that exposure therapy works by reconnecting areas of the brain that stopped communicating due to experiencing one or more traumatic events Although the focus of exposure therapy is on reducing individual PTSD symptoms, the impact of therapy can extend beyond the individual level leading to better relationship functioning and social engagement Multi-level treatments like exposure therapy and relational interventions could be a powerful.."

It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Along with preventing pain, one function of anesthesia is to keep a person from remembering unpleasant experiences. And yet, after surgery, a very small number of patients report distressing events, which can have long-term effects, including PTSD. Anesthesia usually ensures patients lack explicit memory, but implicit memories can still form. Previous studies have suggested that implicit memory formation can occur under sedation, via circuits in the amygdala. To investigate this phenomenon, researchers in Israel conducted experiments on monkeys undergoing anesthesia using two different drugs: ketamine, an NMDA receptor antagonist; and midazolam, a GABA coagonist. The team made single-cell neuron recordings on sedated animals while the animals underwent classical conditioning using tones and an aversive odor. Specifically, the monkeys were conditioned to take a deeper breath after hearing a tone, in anticipation of a noxious odor that would make them inhale less deeply..."
