2.26 is a 6-unit Honors-level subject serving as the Mechanical Engineering department’s sole course in compressible fluid dynamics. The prerequisites for this course are undergraduate courses in thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer.
The goal of this course is to lay out the fundamental concepts and results for the compressible flow of gases. Topics to be covered include: appropriate conservation laws; propagation of disturbances; isentropic flows; normal shock wave relations, oblique shock waves, weak and strong shocks, and shock wave structure; compressible flows in ducts with area changes, friction, or heat addition; heat transfer to high speed flows; unsteady compressible flows, Riemann invariants, and piston and shock tube problems; steady 2D supersonic flow, Prandtl-Meyer function; and self-similar compressible flows. The emphasis will be on physical understanding of the phenomena and basic analytical techniques.

This course examines wave equations for fluid and visco-elastic media, wave-theory formulations of acoustic source radiation and seismo-acoustic propagation in stratified ocean waveguides, and Wavenumber Integration and Normal Mode methods for propagation in plane-stratified media. Also covered are Seismo-Acoustic modeling of seabeds and ice covers, seismic interface and surface waves in a stratified seabed, Parabolic Equation and Coupled Mode approaches to propagation in range-dependent ocean waveguides, numerical modeling of target scattering and reverberation clutter in ocean waveguides, and ocean ambient noise modeling. Students develop propagation models using all the numerical approaches relevant to state-of-the-art acoustic research.
This course was originally offered in Course 13 (Department of Ocean Engineering) as 13.853. In 2005, ocean engineering subjects became part of Course 2 (Department of Mechanical Engineering), and this course was renumbered 2.068.

With the help of simple, teacher-led demonstration activities, students learn the basic concepts of heat transfer by means of conduction, convection, and radiation. Students then apply these concepts as they work in teams to solve two problems. One problem requires that they maintain the warm temperature of one soda can filled with water at approximately body temperature, and the other problem is to cause an identical soda can of warm water to cool as much as possible during the same thirty-minute time interval. Students design their solutions using only common, everyday materials. They record the water temperatures in their two soda cans every five minutes, and prepare line graphs in order to visually compare their results to the temperature of an unaltered control can of water.

Connecting for Climate Change Action

Rapid, unprecedented climate warming is occurring because of increased concentrations of atmospheric greenhouse gases due to the use of fossil fuels. As Earth’s climate warms, extreme heat events will increase, sea levels will rise, freshwater resources will become more scarce and infectious diseases will spread. Despite imminent threats from climate change and the need for people from all sectors, backgrounds, and disciplines to contribute to solutions, we avoid taking actions necessary for mitigation. We created Connecting for Climate Change Action, aimed at community and Post-Secondary learners from a range of disciplines. The course combines Western and Indigenous Sciences to educate and encourage discussions on climate change. We provide innovative, experiential, online learning opportunities to engage and stimulate student action to mitigate climate change and leave Earth a sustainable place for future generations. The course contains approximately eight weeks of materials and is packaged in four modules: 1) Ways of Knowing the Climate is Changing, which provides an introduction to euro-western Science and Indigenous Knowledge, and explores positionality; 2) The Earth, Climate and Connections, which provides a basic understanding of the Earth and its climate system, and examines various views of human's role in the Earth system; 3) Why is the Earth's Climate Changing?, which provides an overview of the knowledge we have of climate change, 4) Emissions, Responsibility, and Reimagining Economies, which shows the complexities of responsibility for our current situation reflect on Indigenous economies that emphasize respect and reciprocity.
