"Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave" Text-Dependent Question organizer adapted from Acheivethecore.org.

Throughout this unit on Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, students practice the same six skills with greater scaffolding and modeling at the beginning, and more independence toward the middle and end. The tasks include: 1. writing to an essential question to access background knowledge; 2. using context clues and root words to determine word meaning; 3. close reading with the aid of a glossary; 4. taking notes one of two graphic organizers (sequence of events and/or empathy map); 5. re-reading to answer text dependent questions; and 6. summarizing the chapter.

This unit is established for 2nd grade to teach about the symbols of the United States. Included are all links and photographs necessary for teaching. Not included is the flag booklet which is not necessary for teaching. To create the booklet you need an extra large piece of red construction paper folded in half with white pages stapled in the middle with a blue square and white stripes on the front to emulate the US flag. The Virtual Field Trip encompasses historical information relative to the Native American - Delaware Indians in which the students will access through technology. The Virtual Field Trip includes imagery and note-worthy information relative to the Conoy or Powhatan Indians, the Lenape Indians and the Nanticoke Indian tribe.The students will have an opportunity to interact with fellow peers and education professionals during allotted breaks in the Virtual Field Trip. The lessson incorporates YouTube videos depicting cultural practices of the three tribes of Indians chosen for discussion. The Virtual Field Trip may be utilized as a precursor for local Delaware Students to visit the Nanticoke Indian Museum in Millsboro, Delaware. The lesson is designed for student research in History, Geography, Civics, and Economics from a historical point of view and addressing current issues.

The original Native American story component lesson was developed as part of an Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and Washington State Leadership and Assistance for Science Education Reform (LASER) project funded through an EPA Region 10 grant. The stories were told by Roger Fernandes of the Lower Elwha Klallam tribe. Mr. Fernandes has been given permission by the tribes to tell these stories.As these lessons and stories were shared prior to the adoption of the Washington State Science Learning Standards in 2013, there was a need to align these stories with the current science standards. This resource provides a current alignment and possible lesson suggestions on how these stories can be incorporated into the classroom. This alignment work has been funded by the NGSS & Climate Science Proviso of the Washington State Legislature as a part of North Central Educational Service District's award.

In this lesson, students will design a model race car and use their model to investigate the relationship between the potential and kinetic energy of their model as it travels down a ramp. Students will also investigate how the acceleration of their model is affected by forces applied and the mass of their model. Students will be asked to identify variables that may affect the acceleration of their model and then design an investigation to test design modifications to reduce friction and air resistance. Students will collect data during their investigation and represent their data in graphs so that they can compare their data with that of their classmates. Students will communicate the results of their investigation and justify their final design choice based on the data they obtain in their investigation.

In this lesson designed to enhance literacy skills, an early astronaut's experiences teach students that Newton's third law of motion—for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction—applies both on Earth and in outer space.

 This problem-based learning module is designed to engage students in solving a real problem within the community.  The question being “How can I help my community get digitally connected?”  Students will choose to investigate one of three solutions of making wifi available in our school district to the most populated areas. They will either choose to put Wifi on bus, placing hotspots in the community or using kajeet.   The students will be using Google Earth Pro to place circles on a map and calculating the area of these circles.  Students will make a model of these circles onto a hard copy using scale factor. At the conclusion, the students will present findings to administration, the board of education, state and local leaders as well as their peers.  These findings can be presented through the choice of a display board, flyer, video production or prezi.This blended module includes teacher-led discussion, group-led investigation and discussions along with technology integration.

While Paul Revere's ride is the most famous event of its kind in American history, other Americans made similar rides during the Revolutionary period.  After learning about some less well known but no less colorful rides that occurred in other locations, students gather evidence to support an argument about why at least one of these "other riders" does or does not deserve to be better known.
