Students are introduced to the concept of energy cycles by learning about the carbon cycle. They will learn how carbon atoms travel through the geological (ancient) carbon cycle and the biological/physical carbon cycle. Students will consider how human activities have disturbed the carbon cycle by emitting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. They will discuss how engineers and scientists are working to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Lastly, students will consider how they can help the world through simple energy conservation measures.

SYNOPSIS: This lesson teaches students about the different ways farms and agriculture are being impacted by climate change.

SCIENTIST NOTES: This lesson allows students to explore the impact of climate change on agriculture. They would be able to identify the underlying climatic variables that affect farming systems in different geographies. All resources were fact-checked, and this lesson has passed the science credibility process.

POSITIVES:
-Students are able to learn about specific climate change topics that are interesting to them.
-Students can learn about the many different ways in which climate change impacts agriculture.
-Students can learn from their peers.

ADDITIONAL PREREQUISITES:
-This is lesson 3 of 6 in our 6th-8th grade Climate Change, Food Production, and Food Security unit.
-While not necessary, it is helpful for students to have a general sense of some of the global impacts of climate change.
-You must create a free account to access the Newsela article.

DIFFERENTIATION:
-Teachers can assign the Teacher Slideshow on Google Classroom and students can submit their work independently.
-Teachers can group students for the guided research section and assign them level-appropriate resources.
-Teachers can eliminate options in the guided research section if the options are overwhelming.
-Teachers can eliminate the video option in the guided research if they want to exclusively assign readings.
-Teachers can review the teacher slideshow as a class and answer the questions as a whole group assignment.

"Microbiome research has consistently been placed in the spotlight over the past two decades, and has shown tremendous promise in the fields of medicine, environmental science, food production, and agriculture. Life on Earth does not exist without microbes, and we may benefit from learning more about them. Yet, there is no common understanding amongst researchers of what a 'microbiome’ actually is. Researchers are now proposing a common definition of ‘microbiome’ to ensure better, more robust research across different disciplines. The authors build on the historical definition offered by Whipps and colleagues in 1988 using new research insights. Additionally, they highlight the importance of microbiomes as drivers for the health of many eukaryotic hosts, including humans and plants. The proposed amendments to the definition specify the elements of microbiome composition and their interactions..."

This course will focus on the emergence and evolution of industrial societies around the world. The student will begin by comparing the legacies of industry in ancient and early modern Europe and Asia and examining the agricultural and commercial advances that laid the groundwork for the Industrial Revolution. The student will then follow the history of industrialization in different parts of the world, taking a close look at the economic, social, and environmental effects of industrialization. This course ultimately examines how industrialization developed, spread across the globe, and shaped everyday life in the modern era. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: identify key ideas and events in the history of industrialization; identify connections between the development of capitalism and the development of modern industry; use analytical tools to evaluate the factors contributing to industrial change in different societies; identify the consequences of industrialization in the 19th and 20th centuries in different societies; critique historical interpretations of the causes and effects of industrialization; and analyze and interpret primary source documents describing the process of industrialization and life in industrial societies. "Nanotechnology has enabled numerous advances in communications, medicine, energy, and agriculture. But as the proliferation of nanomaterials ramps up, unintended consequences are becoming increasingly visible. A recent study examined the effects of silver nanoparticles on soils supporting the growth of maize. Findings revealed a 30% decrease in the relative abundance of members of the archaea community, which are important for nitrogen cycling in soil, vital for plant growth. Nanosilver also increased the abundance of certain possibly phytopathogenic fungi, possibly by eliminating bacteria that normally keep these harmful fungi in check. Finally, increased root growth seems unsustainable because it is probably caused by these stress factors, and not by beneficial effects. While this study was limited to relatively small, pot experiments, the findings suggest that the microbiome is an essential inclusion for studying the long-term effects of nanomaterials on the environment..."
