I used Google Translate to convert chapters of the US History OpenStax textbook to languages other than English by following these steps using Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro:
1. download the .pdf
2. Open in Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro (or other program that allows altering a .pdf file)
3. Under "Document", select "Extract" then identify the pages (assigned by Adobe, not the textbook) to extract. The file should be about 1/2 of a chapter to submit to Google Translate, otherwise it's too large.
4. Save the extracted file under a new name.
5. Go to translate.google.com and: a) select the language to translate to; b) click on "Translate a whole document", then upload the extracted chapter portion.
6. The translation appears as a page in the browser (I use Google Chrome)
7. Right click on the page and "Save as" on your computer (html file).
8. Upload to your LMS or other website, or email to the target student(s). The page will open in their browser.

Although it's good for international students to learn and practice English in a formal setting, I feel it's unfair to test them on a subject they are completely unfamiliar with in a language they may not understand perfectly - double whammy! Translating can help even the playing field.

Using the Instrument 1 Device and App, students get the opportunity to experiment with different sounds and try out these scales without the possibility of playing a wrong note. This adds a level of comfort for the students to experiment with the scale before learning it on their respective instrument. Having a chance to try out this device can also help a student decide what instrument they might be interested in playing. It also helps students connect the music theory to the act of playing the scale before they are ready to play it on their specific instrument. The app can be used on different recording software such as LOGIC and GARAGEBAND. Using the Spotify Playlist helps students hear the connection between this scale and popular music. The Hipster Bait App gives students a fun extracurricular game to play on their own time that is music-related that connects students to music culture. The combination of these three apps gives students many avenues to explore on the topic of music at an upper primary grade level.

Measurement in Grade 7 sees us move from simply finding the perimeter and area of a common object, such as a rectangle or triangle, and move into complex shapes that may involve a combination of different shapes or circles. This unit reviews the basics of finding the area of rectangles, triangles, and parallelograms. It concludes with some real-life problems to which these concepts can be applied. This unit is designed for the Alberta Grade 7 Curriculum.

Granitic Rocks and Geologic History of the Idaho Batholith
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted

This is a lab/project in which the students not only name and identify a suite of granitic rocks but try to piece together the tectonic and geologic history of the Idaho batholith. This activity brings together the process of naming rocks, determining the I-, S- and A-type nature of the rocks, estimating magma source and potential assimilants, a nonquantitative depth of intrusion for the suites, and any distinctive textures that might help tell the story of the batholith. It forces students to move outside the rock in a box lab for granites and create a regional geologic history.

I find this project to work well in class for a number of reasons. Group work and counting on your classmates to interpret the rocks is a foundation of the entire project. The students get exposed to more rocks than in a typical lab without having to identify each of the in great detail since they are ultimately only responsible for their own suite. I have removed at least one lecture on granites and replaced it with this project for them to do the interpretation themselves rather than just passively absorb the geology.

The students have just a basic introduction to I-, A- and S-type granites and the models for the generation of these magmas. They have already learned about grain size relating to cooling rate and depth of intrusion, but it usually is awhile since they thought about these concepts.

Obviously this project depends on the exact samples being available, but the theory of the project can be applied to numerous geologic settings.
