In Writing 241/244, we will concentrate on the study and writing of realistic short fiction, with the purpose of stimulating your creativity, enhancing your analytical abilities, and improving your writing. Students write sketches and stories for class discussion and analysis, usually in the form of small group workshops. Students will also analyze professional stories to understand narrative tools, structural components, and stylistic choices through written analysis and small group discussion.

 Overview: In this lesson, students closely examine Crevecoeur’s third letter in order to understand historically early American literature and the culture. Students critically read the letter and answer critical content questions to increase their knowledge. Students will take a quiz demonstrating their understanding of some of the literature of this period. Finally, in the spirit of early America, students will write their own letters defining what an American is, why immigrants should come, and what the American Dream is or if it is still alive. Students will exchange their letters with a partner for feedback and then turn them in for completion points.

CRW 111 students gain practice in applying effective strategies for understanding college material by relating generalization to supporting ideas and identifying the patterns into which ideas are structured. Students use computers to develop analytical capabilities in the course's computer lab component. CRW 111 carries 3 credits and meets 3 hours per week.

This book explores the essential elements, processes. and techniques of successful academic writing. Focusing on significant developments in technology, learning styles, and cultural competencies, readers are introduced to the various critical stages of the essay writing process; with relevant links, exercises, and downloadable handouts.

This assignment asks students to write a data-rich policy brief, showing their ability to apply standard microeconomic models and contextualizing the policy debate with numeric evidence.

Definitions are a part of daily life, academics, and careers. How do they work? What makes an effetive definition. Students examine examples of definitions and revise them to learn about options for writing clearly for varied audiences. Finally, students create their own expanded definition.

Students will be introduced to the definition mode of writing. Students will learn to define a particular subject by responding in an editorial format. Students will first compose an editorial graphic organizer, which will aid in composing a completed editorial using the writing process.

A lab where the students study the density of pennies. They will discover the limitations of measurements and the value of multiple trials.

This project involves a field trip to the Jordan Formation in Winona, MN. Student teams are assigned a section of the outcrop from which they are to determine a stratigraphic column. The class then performs a lateral analysis and builds a composite stratigraphic column for the formation. As a final product, the students write up the class's observations about the formation.

In this assignment, a group of four to five students will select one country that has been ranked in the World Development Indicators of the World Bank, the Human Development Indicators of the United Nations Development Program, and the Happy Planet Indicator of the New Economic Foundation. Using the selected country's political, social, and economic statistics, each group will assess the methodology and validity of the measurements of WDI, HDI, and HPI indicators for the country. Students will compare and contrast the measurement methods, analyze the strengths and weaknesses of each indicator, and propose recommendations to improve these indicators.
