Spanish I is very different from other classes at MIT. The central component of the text and workbook is a series of 26 half-hour video episodes. The videos allow students to learn authentic Spanish and experience its cultural diversity while following a good story full of surprises and human emotions. Students also listen to an audio-only program integrated with the text and workbook.
In the classroom, students do a variety of activities and exercises, which include talking in Spanish about the video program, practicing pronunciation and grammar, and interacting in Spanish with classmates in pairs and small groups. The class is conducted in Spanish as much as possible, but English is used where necessary for clarity and efficiency. This course deals with all basic language skills: aural comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. This class assumes no previous knowledge of Spanish.

Life in the City is designed for beginner students and uses photos to prompt discussion about where they live, work, study, and have fun. To help your students identify the Future Continuous, they will be asked to look at a timeline and compare the following sentences:Sally is preparing her swimming gear now.Sally will start her training session at noon.At 12:30 pm, she will be swimming.The final sentence is in the Future Continuous. This tense is used to describe an event that will be in progress at a specific time in the future. In this case, the action is “swimming” and the specific time in the future is “12:30 pm”. We use used to to talk about repeated habits or actions in the past that are no longer true in the present. For some students, using used to can be intimidating, as they’ve already learned the verb use in other forms. Additionally, they may have already learned that used to also means “accustomed to”.  Now, they have to learn a completely new way to use it so don’t let them be scared! Used to is a useful phrase because it immediately signifies a lot of information. This activity is a good review for adult or teen ESL learners on time clauses. The movie, In Time, is set in a futuristic world where time is the currency. After ten questions on what happens before or after another, there are three interesting discussion questions.

This course introduces students to the theory and practice of modeling phonology, with an empirical focus on modeling the discovery of static phonotactics, the discovery of alternations, learning in the midst of variation and exceptions, and the discovery of gradient patterns. This course is also intended to provide hands-on experience with various aspects of using and developing models, including preparing training data, running simulations, and interpreting their results.

This Lesson Plan was created by Molly Simpson. The attached Lesson Plan is designed for Grade 3 English Language Arts students. Students will understand and use 3rd grade level vocabulary, use creative thinking skills to write a short story, proofread and edit their own work, and publish a final copy of their written work. This video series consists of 5 videos in which the instructor (from the Sibaway Institute) goes through two traditional proverbs, word by word, and translates them. He explains and references several Arabic and English grammatical concepts while doing so, attempting to teach both translation skills and grammar at the same time.

This new open educational resource is for Elementary Italian. Our goal is for this book to be comprehensive, user-friendly, inclusive, and cost-effective. Tutt* a tavola has two parts, one for each course, with six chapters in each. Generally speaking, each chapter addresses three to four grammatical topics and includes a vocabulary section related to a cultural theme. The vocabulary is also incorporated into the grammatical presentations and exercises. There is also a short reading in each chapter regarding different aspects of culture and language, to address those questions of diversity and inclusion that are often missing from the textbooks we have used in the past. To include more culture, we have also included multimedia: each chapter begins with a song that is used as a starting point for the inductive presentation of the chapter’s content, and ends with a video (a film clip, an interview, social media) that summarizes the ideas covered.

Tá Falado includes 46 podcast lessons on the pronunciation and grammar of Portuguese, specifically designed to help those who already speak Spanish. The lessons are built around Portuguese dialogs that are repeated in Spanish, providing a direct comparison of the two languages. All lessons include downloadable PDF files with the transcripts and notes, mp3 audio files, and blog discussions. Additionally all of the dialogs present cultural scenarios that illustrate differences between North American and Brazilian culture.

This lecture will discuss common grammar errors and stylistic weaknesses in college students' writing--including problems like run-ons, misplaced and dangling modifiers, and illogical tense shifts--and will suggest ways to revise confusing sentences and paragraphs.  The lecture is offered here in three different formats: video without captions, video with captions, and a full transcript.
