From Racist to Non-Racist to Anti- Racist: Becoming Part of the Solution

For years I’ve wanted to write a book about racism. But after visiting Barnes and Nobles, both online and our actual bookstore here in Boise, Idaho; I realized there were already volumes of books and articles written on the subject of racism. I asked myself, could I write a book on racism that would be different than the books already available? So, I started to think about my twenty years of personal experiences, conducting courses, giving seminars, lectures, and writing articles about racism. In those seminars, lectures and articles, I always wanted to make sure my students, the attendees , and readers learned something specific; something they could take home and use immediately. After realizing what I’d been doing for all those years, I decided that teaching something very specific about racism would make my book different. In all my lectures, seminars, courses and articles, I always had a primary goal; teach people how to move from being a non-racist, to becoming an antiracist. Everything I spoke, taught and wrote was about helping people to see where they really stood regarding racism and how to take the necessary action to becoming a positive change agent.

From Seedlings to Success: How One State’s Funding of OER Projects Helped to Launch OER Initiatives Across Multiple Campuses

In 2018, the Alabama Commission on Higher Education (ACHE) and the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) launched an OER grant program to help lower the cost of higher education. This experimental study, which involved over 18,000 students and generated a cost savings of over $2,000,000, raised awareness among faculty and staff of the many advantages of using OER. Subsequently, in response to multiple requests for Creative Commons (CC) training, the partners launched a second grant program with the intention to train-the-trainer, whereby multiple institutions statewide would have a resident expert on OER and CC licensing. As a result of the two large grant programs and some smaller programs funded by ACHE, the state has fostered numerous OER champions who have launched some innovative initiatives on their campuses. During this session, attendees will learn about the successes and challenges that ACHE and ACCS experienced when launching the programs, and they will receive detailed information about some of the activities going on at two of Alabama’s public institutions, the University of Montevallo and the University of North Alabama.

Research funders are requiring or strongly encouraging open and reproducible methods at increased rates, leading researchers to rely on more data management tools while institutions continue to provide services to support them. Research support staff adapt quickly to guide their stakeholders and provide resources, while administrators must find methods to determine adoption and success across the community.

In this webinar, COS Director of Policy David Mellor shares an update on funder expectations like preregistration, data sharing, and open access outputs, as well as strategies to highlight these practices in funding proposals. COS Director of Product Nici Pfeiffer also discusses OSF features that enable researchers to meet and exceed these expectations, as well as provide unique activity insights for administrators, and how COS continues to work with the funder and institution communities to facilitate transparent practices across the lifecycle.

This group project is designed for international students to research into topics related to the theme of success in graduate school and give a presentation to their classmates on their topic, preferably teaching the class on that topic but also engaging the class in the lesson. Students will also listen intently as their classmates present and critique some presentations formally. The instructor usually offers the students a variety of topics but groups can propose other topics to the instructor for his/her approval. A Guide for Doctoral Students and Junior Faculty Members in the Behavioral and Social Sciences

Life in academia is like life in no other profession. The intellectual freedom in conducting research coupled with the ability to positively impact the lives of students through teaching makes it exciting and noble. The road to success in making a difference through knowledge creation (research), knowledge dissemination (teaching) and activities related to both (service) is riddled with many challenges. While PhD programs are designed to teach students the nitty gritty details of conducting research, few focus on the broad issues of how to build a successful research program, how to build an effective teaching portfolio and how to do deal with the many other challenges encountered. Navigating the broader challenges of academia is often accomplished by trial-and-error or ad-hoc mentoring one may receive. Road to Success: A Guide for Doctoral Students and Junior Faculty Members in the Behavioral and Social Sciences by Viswanath Venkatesh provides advice and tools, seeks to help researchers achieve success by navigating through these very challenges.

Tell us how you are using this book If you are a graduate student or prospective graduate student, a course instructor, a scholar conducting research, or another reader please complete the form at https://bit.ly/roadtosuccess_interest

Available formats:
Paperback (ISBN:978-1-949373-73-8)
PDF (ISBN: 978-1-949373-74-5)

The book comprises 20 chapters that are organized into five major sections:
1. Research
2. Managing the PhD program
3. Life after the PhD
4. Teaching and service
5. Broader advice

In addition to the author, both junior and senior scholars have provided contributions to share their own experiences and observations of others who have been successful.

The most important components of the book are the various tools (e.g., how-to advice, checklists) that are provided to help junior researchers head up the road to success and to arm senior researchers to guide junior researchers along the way. The various tools target the following six areas:
1. Building and sustaining a research program
2. Writing a paper
3. Responding to reviews
4. Planning and monitoring through various stages of the PhD program
5. Becoming an effective teacher
6. Achieving work-life balance
