This course is about solving complex problems. Our favorite problems are not just technically complex but also characterized by the presence of many different social actors that hold conflicting interests, objectives, and perceptions and act strategically to get the best out of a problem situation. This course offers guidance for policy analysts who want to assess if and how their analysis could be of help, based on the premise that problem formulation is the cornerstone in addressing complex problems. After this course, students would have obtained a theoretical insight into different models of decision-making processes, their implications in terms of supporting decision making and the potential roles that analysts; they can make a structured problem analysis in a complex situation, and can lay down their findings in an ‰"issue paper‰;" they know how to use a range of different methods and techniques to support attainment of these objectives; can formulate plans for a further analysis and closer examination, including the specification and the choice of possible mathematical models to be used. The completion of the practical part of this course will be an issue paper (written in pairs).

This workshop provides an introduction to urban environmental design and explores the potential of information technology and the Internet to transform public education, city design, and community development in inner-city neighborhoods. Integration of comprehensive (“top-down”) and grassroots (“bottom-up”) approaches to design and planning is a major theme.
Students will work in a real neighborhood with real people on a real project, putting theory into practice and reflecting on insights gained in the process. We will study environmental and community history and devise designs for vacant land near a middle school in West Philadelphia within the context of planning for the larger community and watershed.

In a world that is becoming more virtual, more global, and more complex, the project manager's ability to function in this environment becomes critical to the success of the project. Project Management from Simple to Complex explores project management within this complex, virtual, and global environment.

This is not a standard textbook that was adapted to the new publishing paradigm but was designed from the beginning to utilize its capabilities. The book is written in collaboration by an expert in Project Management—Russell Darnall—and an expert in writing instructional texts and using technology for communicating online—John Preston—to create a unique learning environment that prepares students to manage projects in a global, multicultural, and online environment.

Project Management from Simple to Complex features a new model for managing projects, as well as, exploration into the personal dynamics of project management and the role those dynamics play in project outcomes.

My purpose in writing this book is to give readers a view into the work of managing information technology in schools. IT professionals will notice differences (some nuanced and some significant) between the needs and expectations of IT users in business and IT in school. With the more complete and more accurate concept the nature of the computing environment necessary for successful schooling, which I intend to provide through this book, IT professionals will be better prepared to meet those needs. Educators will also benefit from this book by clarifying the nature of their IT needs and how these may be different from those that are familiar to IT professionals who are hired to work in your school.

Students will correctly key specific documents that have previously been taught by using a simulation provided from a Computer Applications and Keyboarding textbook. This lesson is not specific to a particular textbook, however, the example provided is from the Century 21 Computer Applications and Keyboarding Textbook, 8th edition. Simulations give students a real-world practice and by adding project management techniques, students can practice working together to complete a long assignment. The class should be divided into teams of 3-4 students. They will choose a group leader and then complete the person responsible column on the provided pdf handout. Students should assess the qualities that each bring to the table and use that to their advantage. Once this has been done, they should decide on the due date for each job and list the date in the completed column and, finally, who will be editing/proofreading the document before the group leader submits for grading. Students are allowed to use their notes and the FBLA format guide, which can be found on the FBLA-PBL.org website, for this project.
