The purpose of this online school setting functioning skills assessment is to determine the likelihood of student success in the online school setting based on specific online functioning skills. Target skills were selected from over six years of observational, qualitative and quantitative data in an online school setting. Students who have strong online functioning skills appear to be more successful in the online school setting according to the data. This assessment form can be used by students to self assess, and/or by a student's parents, administrators and teachers in collaboration. The from consists of ten questions based on the most important functioning skills and behaviors needed in order have the best chance of success in an online setting. Participants are asked to answer on a 1-4 rubric resulting in a Total Score in order to determine the likelihood of success online. Assessment data is expected to be used to drive student interventions including teacher instruction of functioning skills, student self assessment, and ongoing progress monitoring. While this was created for Special Education Students, it can be used for any student or adult who is engaged in online learning.

Students will be presented with a problem; that is to determine the general characteristics (stratigraphy, water table depth) of a heterogeneous deposit (glacial till south of the MSU campus or proglacial sediments south of Ludington, MI) using electrical resistivity methods. The project consists of three separate activities: 1) use laboratory experiments to measure the relationship between soil water content and electrical resistivity for different soil samples obtained from the sites (2-3 samples per group), 2) use simple modeling software to calculate the resistivity response for simple geological models, based on information from well logs and the results of the laboratory measurements, and 3) design (min-max a-spacing and stepsize, based on the forward modeling results), execute, and analyze a field sounding experiment. Results will be summarized in a report and presented in class. Uses geophysics to solve problems in other fields

This site makes the well-known security maps of HOLC available in digital form, as well as the data and textual assessments of the area descriptions that were created to go with the maps. By bringing study of HOLC into the digital realm, Mapping Inequality embraces a big data approach that can simultaneously give a national view of the program or a neighborhood-level assessment of the 1930s real estate rescue. Project researchers are providing access to some of the digital tools and interactive resources they are using in their own research, in the hope that the public will be able to understand the effects of federal housing policy and local implementation in their own communities.

The exercise is built around 4 global data maps: 1) Earthquake location and depth, 2) Location of recent volcanic activity, 3) Seafloor Age, and 4) Topography and Bathymetry The exercise is based on the "jigsaw" concept, mixing the students to work in different groups during the exercise. DPB includes opportunities for all students to make oral presentations to their fellow students. The exercise is done over about 3 hours. I usually do it in 50 minute periods on three separate days, but it can also be done in a three hour lab period. Although the data used in DPB are state-of-the-art, the exercise does not depend on student access to computers. Unlike many others, this exercise is based on observation and classification, rather than learning computer data manipulation skills. The students enjoy DPB and many report it as the best activity of their semester! I hope that you will find it useful in your classroom!

There is growing body of evidence to support that students who directly experience authentic scientific research are more likely to continue onto advanced degrees and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). In an effort to introduce more students to the benefits of scientific research we have drawn on an ongoing research project aimed at understanding how Corals Respond to the Environment (CRE) to develop an interdisciplinary laboratory course based on Authentic Research Experiences (ARE). A small cohort of undergraduate students enrolled in a semester-long course, entitled CREARE, perform biochemical experiments in the laboratory, analyze environmental data by R statistical software and prepared a report modeled after a research manuscript to present their work. The impact of CREARE on student learning gains and attitudes towards science is being measured, as is the impact of CREARE on participants' career choices and retention in STEM. This multidisciplinary research program addresses the impact of climate change on the health of a critically endangered coral species, ultimately leading to a better stewardship of this invaluable resource. Furthermore, CREARE offers a unique experience for students, one that may serve as a model for the development of more research-based courses, leading to improved retention in our STEM departments.

--Understanding why we have seasons and the cause of seasonal variation in temperature. --Learning about how the Earth rotates on a tilted axis compared to its orbit around the Sun.
Learning Objectives
--Students learn about seasons by building a model of the Earth and the Sun, and investigating how sunlight hits the Northern and Southern Hemispheres during different seasons. --Students explain that the same amount of light hitting the ground heats up a small area more than a large area --Students show that the angle at which the sunlight hits the Earth influences how much the sunlight heats up the Earth. Students demonstrate that the angle at which the sunlight hits the Earth is related to the tilt of the Earth’s rotational axis compared to the Earth’s orbit around the Sun.
