This guide is designed to support the integration of OER and DEI efforts within higher education institutions. Based on research funded by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation that examined the strategies and experiences of the sixty-six colleges, universities, and state systems that participated in AAC&U’s inaugural, yearlong Institute on Open Educational Resources (2021–22), this publication provides evidence-based guidance and best practices that result in initiative sustainability and broad adoption of OER by strategically connecting this work to DEI goals, strategies, policies, initiatives, and offices that also exist within a given educational context.

Library Design: Incorporating Student and Faculty voice through Design Thinking
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating

Often library or learning commons spaces are designed or redesigned without significant input from customers(i.e. students, teachers, or librarians).  Including student voice in design helps activates students' sense of engagement and teaches problem solving skills.  Libraries are increasingly coming to recognize that including student voice in library policies and library design is not only good for students as learners, but also good for building strong and collaborative library-student relationships.  As outlined in the U.S. Department of Education's Future Ready Librarians framework,  the role of the librarian as a facility planner means that the librarian needs to engage in best practices around gathering "client" information and empowering clients as "owners" of the space.   The framework also recognizes the role of librarians in inspiring students as creators. This one week course will introduce library school students and school administrators to methods for incorporating student and teacher input into a library design project.  A core part of the module includes introducing library students to the Design Thinking Process as a vehicle for more customer-centered design.  Students will then create their own activities for gathering student or faculty input.  A variety of inspiring readings on libraries and design from both inside of OER Learning Commons, Creative Commons licensed materials, and other sources will be utilized as well as materials introducing the Design Thinking Process. Objectives:Through example, lecture, and practice students will become familiar with the Design Thinking Process and begin to use it as a method for solving library design challenges.Students will be able to identify how the Design Thinking Process interviews contribute to empathy and lead to more user centered design.Students will experience using principle of open learning to build a library environment that is inviting to all.Students will work collaboratively, modeling the collaborative work they want their future students to engage in.

Students with disabilities at Umpqua Community College deserve access to all campus opportunities to engage, to learn, and to be known. Because we know that advancing digital accessibility is a collective project with many stakeholders, this local action plan proposes short term and long term goals to help campus stakeholders work together and improve digital accessibility over time.

This Task Force acknowledges the level of support already received from the campus administration and faculty for accessibility efforts within asynchronous and synchronous online courses. It is our hope to use this information as a platform to increase accessibility within the physical classroom as well as digitally.

Högskolepedagogisk konferens 2014

Short Description:

Long Description:
Studenterna förbereder teman i grupper. Internationalisation and the Culture of Academic Writing in English
Jane Mattisson, School of Learning and Environment, Kristianstad University By examining the relationship between the culture of internationalisation and the use of English in university classrooms, this paper demonstrates that the acquisition of one of the most important academic skills, i.e. writing in English, is efficiently achieved with the aid of process writing combined with peer reviewing. International students learn from one another under the guidance of the teacher as they adapt previous knowledge to the demands of the Swedish university classroom Knowledge Dump: That’s not what I wipedgriped hyped TYPED! A Consideration of the Pedagogical Implications of Using Word Processors and their Affect on Writing Teri Schamp-Bjerede, School of Education and Environment, Kristianstad University
The author of this paper assess the use of word processors as helpful tools, or hindrances in writing, and questions what these programs have affected, and how these effects are revealed by the users in connection to writing skills. By reviewing how writing skills are acquired, and how word processors are used, the author compares and contrasts ways in which those affects are exposed, and highlights instances of reliance that users have on word processors, and the tools found embedded in the programs.

Attitudes, obstacles and promoters to research among medical doctors: A pilot study
Lena Sandin Wranker, School of Health and sciences, Blekinge Institute of Technology, and Division of Geriatric Medicine, Lund University, Peter Anderberg, School of Health and sciences, Blekinge Institute of Technology
The aim of this study was to analyze factors either promoting or being obstacle in medical doctors’ choice between two levels of education. The first level was a shorter course in basic scientific education, (FoUST), resulting in a certificate. The alternative given was a course in research methodology, (FoU), resulting in 30 Credits at the University of Lund. This study will focus on attitudes towards research and results will be implemented in future courses, in an attempt to make them more relevant for both students and clinicians, regarding content and pedagogy.
