English Language Learners Bring You the World is an annual publication of writings by the students in the English as a Second Language and Intensive English programs at South Puget Sound Community College. In it, you will find paragraphs of a few sentences by beginning writers as well as longer essays from our most advanced classes. Regardless of length, each piece offers a window into the writer's unique perspective on culture, language, and life as an immigrant.

Long Description:
Since the year 2000, English language learners at SPSCC have shared their writings in this annual digest. After a two-year hiatus during the global COVID-19 pandemic, in a time of many challenges, it is with joy that we renew our publication of English Language Learners Bring You the World.

This year, over 70 students from 37 countries have shared their stories and essays. The contributions are organized alphabetically by country of origin. Student biographies are listed in an About the Authors section at the end of the book. Although the students in the English as a Second Language and Intensive English programs at South Puget Sound Community College come from all over the world, their common experiences and dedication to learning English bring them together. As teachers, we are honored to have students who are so caring and so interested in learning. We hope you draw as much inspiration from reading their stories as we have.

This is a collection of stories of Joha, a character renowned the world and he appears in tales and folklore from India to Turkey, scanned and available for download. Each available download is fully color-illustrated and fully voweled. Stories average 16 pages in length.

BookSpring, a 45 year old early literacy non-profit in Austin Texas, is providing rich digital content base on its time-tested educator kits online for families through 52 Weekly Themes for ages 3-5 and 6-8. Each week, a new theme related to early childhood curriculum is released with a video prompt to activate prior knowledge from Bibi the Butterfly, followed with a series of curated digital books in browser-based and downloadable pdf form. These resources are followed with reflection questions, suggested follow up activities, and additional resources to extend the learning at home. The materials are offered under a Creative Commons By-Share Alike license and available in both Spanish and English. The themes start in August 2020 and are planned to be completed in August 2021, and will be sustained online indefinitely. Plans for Toddler units (24-36 months) and older children (9-12) are being considered for future development. No log in is required, but donations are welcome and eligible as charitable contributions for the U.S. IRS. This unit looks at the interplay between losses in privacy and gains in convenience that accompany the ever-expanding use of and reliance on digital media and technology in our lives. The aim is not to convince students of a specific stance; rather, it is to provide an opportunity for students to look critically at the ways in which privacy has changed and to think about taking intentional action regarding their own use of digital media.

Each week of the unit, students will grapple with an essential question that focuses their attention on one aspect of privacy. As the core text, George Orwell’s 1984 elucidates two major definitions of privacy: first, the internal thoughts that we develop and contemplate without outside influence; and second, the freedom from being observed, accessed, and controlled by outsiders.

Throughout this unit, students will produce short argumentative pieces drawing evidence from the texts read for and discussed in class. The short pieces of writing students produce throughout the class will culminate in a final argumentative essay weighing the interplay and value of privacy and convenience in our digital lives.

This Remote Learning Plan was created by Rosa Zimmerman in collaboration with Nicholas Ziegler as part of the 2020 ESU-NDE Remote Learning Plan Project. Educators worked with coaches to create Remote Learning Plans as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.The attached Remote Learning Plan is designed for 9-12 Spanish language learners. Students will describe their or other's feelings by using the "Feelings Choice Board," students have the choice to complete this task by summarizing a reading about a classmate's feelings, creating a slideshow as they describe others' feelings, write a paragraph about their family members' feelings or create a video describing their own feelings. This Remote Learning Plan addresses the following NDE Standard: Communication 1.3 Students present ideas and information according to a variety of purposes and audiences. Cognition 5.1 Students self-assess growth in language learning, practice, and understanding.It is expected that this Remote Learning Plan will take students 55 minutes to complete.

In 1993, President Bill Clinton asked Maya Angelou to write a poem for his inauguration. After Clinton’s inaugural address, Maya Angelou recited her original poem “On the Pulse of Morning.” As the second poet in history to read a poem at a presidential inauguration—Robert Frost was the first when he recited a poem at John F. Kennedy’s inauguration in 1961—Angelou captured the attention of the nation. President Clinton called her poem “an eternal gift to America.” This clip from American Masters | Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise features part of her performance at the inauguration and provides background about Clinton’s reasons for asking her, her response, and how the poem was received by the public.

In this resource, students explore the role of poetry in American politics, compare Angelou and Frost, and consider how Angelou’s poem reflects the challenges and concerns of the time. Discussion questions, teaching tips, and a student handout push students to engage with Angelou’s words and to think critically about her famous work.

Active Calculus is different from most existing calculus texts in at least the following ways: the text is freely readable online in HTML format and is also available for in PDF; in the electronic format, graphics are in full color and there are live links to java applets; version 2.0 now contains WeBWorK exercises in each chapter, which are fully interactive in the HTML format and included in print in the PDF; the text is open source, and interested users can gain access to the original source files on GitHub; the style of the text requires students to be active learners — there are very few worked examples in the text, with there instead being 3-4 activities per section that engage students in connecting ideas, solving problems, and developing understanding of key calculus concepts; each section begins with motivating questions, a brief introduction, and a preview activity, all of which are designed to be read and completed prior to class; following the WeBWorK exercises in each section, there are several challenging problems that require students to connect key ideas and write to communicate their understanding.
