The goal of the Center for Applied Second Language Studies at the University of Oregon is to improve the teaching and learning of foreign languages. Similar to other language resource centers, CASLS creates language learning and teaching materials, offers professional development opportunities, and conducts research on foreign language learning.

The Center for Educational Resources in Culture, Language and Literacy (CERCLL) at the University of Arizona is one of the 15 Language Research Centers established across the nation under Title VI of the U.S. Department of Education. CERCLL researches culture, language and literacy with less commonly taught languages. The center also strives to provide educators with teaching resources and opportunities for their professional development.

Students will develop a research design and use the scientific method as it applies to social scientific research, and create an original presentation and research paper concerning adolescents in American society and the challenges they face.

"Built environment microbiomes are shaped by their occupants and the outside environment. These microbiomes can have a profound impact on the health of its occupants. The International Space Station (ISS) is a uniquely sealed environment, with only the arrival of crewmembers and supplies introducing new microbes. Monitoring the ISS microbiome is important to ensure astronaut health and spacecraft integrity. So, a recent study used samples from two long-term projects, Microbial Tracking 1 and 2, which sampled the same surfaces over two 14-month-long periods. The ISS surface microbiome was dominated by microbes associated with human skin. The most represented groups were Staphylococcus and Malassezia among bacteria and fungi, respectively. Community abundances shifted over time, but did not differ between surfaces. Overall, the metabolism genes tended towards amino acid utilization rather than carbohydrate metabolism..."

This curriculum focuses on child maltreatment issues and effective practice strategies among immigrant Asian families. Specifically, it elucidates demographic and behavioral characteristics of child abuse victims and perpetrators in four major immigrant Asian communities (Cambodian, Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese), factors contributing to the selection of two types of placement (in-home and out-of-home) by child protective services workers, and effective child welfare practice with immigrant Asian families. This course introduces undergraduate planning students to the role of the planner in researching issues in cities both in the United States and abroad. This course is a practical, hands-on workshop that challenges students to research, write and present their ideas on two different cities: A U.S. City (preferably somewhere close) and Copenhagen. Students will be equipped to:

select and research a thesis topic,
work professionally with faculty and other experts on the topic of their choice, and
research, write and present.

SYNOPSIS: In this lesson, students explore four major categories of climate change, identify one to further research, and create a fact sheet.

SCIENTIST NOTES: This lesson introduces students to factsheets and infographics and how powerful they can be in providing and relaying information. Students start the lesson by reading through a factsheet/infographic about New Jersey’s changing climate followed by a partner discussion about how the factsheet makes them feel. Students are then able to pick one of four categories, do research about their topic, and create their own factsheet and infographic. Student factsheets/infographics are shared and compared/contrasted with one another. This lesson allows for multiple instances of student autonomy and provides a creative outlet for discussing climate change. It is hereby recommended for teaching.

POSITIVES:
-This lesson can be used in English, social studies, computer science, digital art, or science classes. It can be easily adjusted to be multidisciplinary.
-Students are given voice and choice in this lesson.
-Students become agents of change in their own communities, identifying problems and solutions.

ADDITIONAL PREREQUISITES:
-Students should be familiar with the basics of climate change.
-Students should be familiar with school-appropriate websites from previous school-related research.

DIFFERENTIATION:
-Students’ communication can be as simple or as thorough as you desire. They will need more time to research and craft their communication if you want their writing to be more fact-based and robust.
-Students can work independently or in a group with adjusted requirements.
-Teachers can use subject and grade level vocabulary already being learned in class. Teachers can add more vocabulary words in the glossary slide of the Teacher Slideshow.
-To deepen a social studies or global connection, students can explore the history of their chosen issue, how other countries are addressing the issue, or focus on a global solution strategy.
-To connect to computer science or digital art, students can create their infographic and fact sheet digitally.
-To further develop practical science or engineering skills, students can work together to create and implement a workable solution at the school, home, or community level.
-Some students may wish to communicate their advocacy via social media. Make sure to follow all school rules and monitor students’ progress if you allow this in the classroom.

This is the start of my OER first year college writing textbook with a thematic focus on student organizations.

Choosing a place of higher education is no easy task.  With so many options, it can be hard to narrow down choices.  Beyond that, many students do not even know where to start.  Use this project as a tool to help students learn where to access helpful information when it comes to choosing the best fit for them.  Also, this project can be used to reinforce research skills.

"Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) regulate cell-fate decisions during embryonic development. But after birth, dysfunctional BMP expression is linked to some human diseases, like carcinomas. In lung cancer, BMPs are reactivated and suppress AMPK signaling. Mitochondrial stress activates AMPK to a ‘normal’ level, where it promotes cancer cell survival, but AMPK can induce cell death if ‘hyperactivated.' BMPs inhibit LKB1, a kinase that can hyperactivate AMPK, making BMPs a potential therapeutic target. So, researchers tested two BMP inhibitors as a combination treatment with mitochondrial targeting agents. In lung cancer cell lines that express LKB1, the combination treatment activated AMPK and suppressed cell growth. Composition 2: Research and Writing was created with the intention of providing a free, comprehensive Composition 2 textbook to the students of Connors State College in Oklahoma. This textbook is a compilation of several OER textbooks and resources with edits, revisions, and additions provided by Brittany Seay. This textbook focuses on the ins and outs of academic writing and research. It looks at the early stages of research from generating ideas and key term searches to creating projects that synthesize the information found from sources. This textbook also discusses academic writing with a particular focus on research writing.

"Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is an aggressive, treatment-resistant liver cancer. One factor associated with poor prognosis in patients with HCC and other cancers is elevated levels of the enzyme WIP1. WIP1 removes phosphate groups from other proteins and is involved in many potentially pathogenic processes. Researchers recently explored WIP1 as a target for HCC treatment. In both patient databases and cell culture experiments, WIP1 was consistently elevated in HCC cells compared to normal liver cells. Further experiments revealed that inhibiting WIP1 slowed cancer progression by increasing DNA damage in cancerous cells, thus killing them. With less WIP1 available, more of the key homologous recombination repair protein H2AX was phosphorylated and impaired, allowing damage to accumulate in HCC cells. Cells from cancers with impaired homologous recombination repair, like breast cancer, can be killed by inhibiting another enzyme, PARP..."
