Students will investigate the calories consumed in a typical day and how much physical activity is needed to stay healthy and fit.  Students/teams will be encouraged to use the internet for research purposes in their design phase. Students will utilize various online platforms to design an infographic that can be shared with relevant individuals in the community and others in the school building

This course encompasses the study of eating as it affects the health and well-being of every human. Topics include taste preferences, food aversions, the regulation of hunger and satiety, food as comfort and friendship, eating as social ritual, and social norms of blame for food problems. The politics of food discusses issues such as sustainable agriculture, organic farming, genetically modified foods, nutrition policy, and the influence of food and agriculture industries. Also examined are problems such as malnutrition, eating disorders, and the global obesity epidemic; the impact of food advertising aimed at children; poverty and food; and how each individual's eating is affected by the modern environment.

Increased energy use per capita is linked to decreased poverty rates. Modest energy increases can lead to significant poverty reduction, but the relationship is not always linear. Factors like governance and social policies also influence poverty levels. Beyond a certain threshold, further energy increases have diminishing returns.

"TRPP2 and STIM1 are important proteins that facilitate the transport of calcium ions in the cell. TRPP2 is a calcium channel encoded by the PKD2 gene, which is mutated in polycystic kidney disease. STIM1, meanwhile, acts as a calcium sensor, monitoring and regulating calcium concentrations. For the first time, researchers have demonstrated that the two proteins form a functional complex in embryonic kidney cells and native vascular smooth muscle cells. Together, TRPP2 and STIM1 modulate store-operated calcium entry to maintain cellular calcium balance. In mice, that synergy protected against agonist-induced contraction of the aorta, suggesting that the TRPP2–STIM1 complex helps maintain blood vessel tone. This second lesson enables students to apply what they know about human reproduction via PIV sex (Lesson 1 of this series) to other means of reproduction. They will not only learn the steps in how insemination and IVF work to create a pregnancy, but they will also learn that people other than parents can provide the genetic material (eggs, sperm, and embryos) and give birth to a child for someone else (surrogates). Students will be working in small groups to help one another understand the concepts and to practice using the inclusive language that the educator modeled in the first lesson.
