Stories and poems that have a familiar structure can create a supportive context for learning about the writing process, building students' background knowledge, and scaffolding their creation of original stories. In this lesson for students in second or late first grade, teachers help students explore the concepts of beginning, middle, and ending by reading a variety of stories and charting the events on storyboards. As they retell the stories, students are encouraged to make use of sequencing words (first, so, then, next, after that, finally). A read-aloud of Once Upon a Golden Apple by Jean Little and Maggie De Vries introduces a discussion of the choices made by an author in constructing a plot. Starting with prewriting questions and a storyboard, students construct original stories, progressing from shared writing to guided writing; independent writing is also encouraged.

Students tell their life stories in this lesson about autobiographies based on family photographs.

Students will close-read an excerpt from a secondary source to explore the significance of the Scientific Revolution. After examining a passage from "The Invention of Science" by David Wotton, students will engage in a seminar-style discussion using the text.

The importance of reading aloud to children is an established tenet of reading instruction. This lesson supports the language development and reading comprehension of kindergarten through second graders. Through the use of the text talk strategy, students explain, develop, and expand story ideas. This lesson is designed to help students learn how to gain meaning from words that are taken out of their original context.

In this task students are asked to describe the data represented in a scatter plot.

The Challenge:
The challenge is to design and build a water filtration device using commonly available materials. To meet this challenge,
students use an iterative repeating process as they build, test, and measure the performance of the filtration
device, analyze the data collected, and use this information to work towards an improved filtration design. It is the
same design process used by engineers and scientists working on ECLSS for NASA. Although students will work in
teams of two–three, they are encouraged to think of their entire class as a single design team working cooperatively
and learning from the efforts of all members in order to produce the best water filtration device.
Students measure the effectiveness of their filtration device using pH test strips. Detailed plans and a complete materials list are provided.

Game 1: Contig Game: This game challenges and extends the number sense experience students have gained from writing equivalent mathematical expressions for target numbers. Game 2: The 24 Game builds on students' ability to find equivalent names for numbers. Game 3: In Tribulation, students must search the game-board for 3 numbers in a row (vertically, horizontally or diagonally as in a word search) that combine to make the target number. In this game, however, there is a prescribed formula for combining the numbers. Students must multiply the first two numbers then add or subtract the third number to produce the target number.

This task presents an incomplete problem and asks students to choose numbers to subtract (subtrahends) so that the resulting problem requires different types of regrouping. This way students have to recognize the pattern and not just follow a memorized algorithm--in other words, they have to think about what happens in the subtraction process when we regroup. This task is appropriate to use after students have learned the standard US algorithm.

The shooting death in Sanford, Florida, of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin at the hands of 28-year-old George Zimmerman in February 2012 has touched off debate on many issues, including the role of race in both the shooting and the subsequent investigation by the Sanford Police department.

This exercise consists of two student readings. The first reading examines the debate surrounding Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law. What is the "Stand Your Ground" law? What do supporters and critics have to say about it? What effect has it had? The second reading takes a wider look at the gun control debate. Should stronger gun control laws be passed? Questions for student discussion follow each reading.

An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate that in similar triangles, the ratio of their areas is the square of the ratio of the sides. As you drag one triangle to resize it, it remains similar to another and the ratios of sides and areas is calculated as you drag. One can be seen to be the square of the other at all times.
