The subject of this course is the historical process by which the meaning of “technology” has been constructed. Although the word itself is traceable to the ancient Greek root teckhne (meaning art), it did not enter the English language until the 17th century, and did not acquire its current meaning until after World War I. The aim of the course, then, is to explore various sectors of industrializing 19th and 20th century Western society and culture with a view to explaining and assessing the emergence of technology as a pivotal word (and concept) in contemporary (especially Anglo-American) thought and expression. Note: In the interests of freshness and topicality we regard the STS.464 syllabus as sufficiently flexible to permit some — mostly minor — variations from year to year. One example of a different STS.464 syllabus can be found in STS.464 Technology and the Literary Imagination, Spring 2008.

Title continues: As a consumer has it ever occurred to you there is a close relationship between your pocketbook (household expenses) and industrial conditions? You complain of high prices but have you ever done anything to discourage such price-boosting factors as burdensome laws which impose unnecessary taxes on legitimate American industry and constant waste promoted by destructive agitators? Help to keep prices down by chasing the flies away from industry. Issued by the National Industrial Conservation Movement, 30 Church Street, New York City. Copies supplied on request. No. E-10.

This course looks at all forms that energy exists. It explains how energy is used in: transport, agriculture, industry, commerce and households. It describes how energy is stored using storage systems such as: battery, flywheels, compressed air, chemical energy systems and pumped storage. This course explains the problem of depletion of energy resources. It describes the environmental damage associated with the use of fossil fuels, acid rains, dangers posed by leaded fuels, oil spills, gas leaks and explosions, water pollution caused by poorly managed coal mines, and air pollution. It describes the environmental damage associated with the use of fuelwood, uranium, hydro-power plants and wind. It also explains possible solutions to the energy-related problems.

Students begin by reading Dr. Seuss' "The Lorax" as an example of how overdevelopment can cause long-lasting environmental destruction. Students discuss how to balance the needs of the environment with the needs of human industry. Student teams are asked to serve as natural resource engineers, city planning engineers and civil engineers with the task to replant the nearly destroyed forest and develop a sustainable community design that can co-exist with the re-established natural area.

This lesson introduces students to the concepts of air pollution and technologies that have been developed by engineers to reduce air pollution. Students develop an understanding of visible air pollutants with an incomplete combustion demonstration, a "smog in a jar" demonstration, construction of simple particulate matter collectors and by exploring engineering roles related to air pollution. Next, students develop awareness and understanding of the daily air quality and trends in air quality using the Air Quality Index (AQI) listed in the newspaper. Finally, students build and observe a variety of simple models in order to develop an understanding of how engineers use these technologies to clean up and prevent air pollution.

As the digital revolution brings with it radical changes in how and what we learn, people must continue to learn all the time. New technologies make possible new approaches to learning, new contexts for learning, new tools to support learning, and new ideas of what can be learned. This course will explore these new opportunities for learning with a special focus on what can be learned through immersive, hands-on activities. Students will participate in (and reflect on) a variety of learning situations, and will use Media Lab technologies to develop new workshops, iteratively run and refine the workshops, and analyze how and what the workshop participants learn.

The Industrial Ecology Open Online Course (IEooc) is a collection of web content on industrial ecology background, methods, and applications. It has two purposes: First, to document and explain some of the ‘soft’ knowledge around industrial ecology concepts, methods, data, and applications that is needed to conduct state-of-the-art industrial ecology research. Second, to guide new industrial ecology researchers towards having fun and impact with properly conducted science for sustainability.
The course was developed for university students. It features the following items, which are freely available for educational use: lectures (screencasts and webinars of 15-60 minutes), exercises with sample solutions, code samples or notebooks, and reading material (papers, essays, reports, blog entries). There are now more than 40 exercises and tutorials, and these form the core of this course.

Industry, which includes large-scale manufacturing and production processes to make products such as steel, cement, and chemicals, is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing emissions from heavy industry, which often relies on fossil fuels to reach the high temperatures needed for many industrial processes, is challenging. Unlike the electricity sector, which already has economically viable solutions like wind and solar, the industry sector is still developing the technologies needed for cost-effective and scalable decarbonization. One solution is to use electrical technologies that can generate high temperatures, but this is often more expensive and has high upfront costs.
