The Geographic Alliance of Iowa (GAI) was established in 1991 with the support of the National Geographic Society (NGS). GAI is composed of K-12 teachers, college and university professors, personnel from a variety of other educational endeavors, and citizens, all of who are concerned with improving geographic instruction in Iowa. As the only entity in Iowa specifically devoted to geography education, the mission of the Geographic Alliance of Iowa (GAI) is to help ensure K-12 graduates are geographically literate citizens. To achieve this mission, the GAI provides resources and expertise to improve the geographic literacy of Iowa students. With a particular focus on K-12 education, including pre-service teachers, the GAI provides exemplary professional development opportunities that follow accepted best practices and offers a clearinghouse of accessible, high quality, standards-based curricular materials.

This website provides a general overview of the history of immigration to Iowa. It also provides several primary sources that address the following questions. Why do people move or choose to immigrate? What did immigrants experience when they arrived in America? How does one's culture influence where they choose to live?

The University of Iowa Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research and College of Education teamed up to develop free eighth grade science curricula on land use and climate science, in response to Iowa’s grade level alignment of the middle school Next Generation Science Standards.

Primary author Dr. Ted Neal, clinical associate professor of science education, led a team of graduate and pre-service teaching students and CGRER scientists to develop the material. They grouped standards, resources and lesson material into six bundles, each designed to engage Iowa’s middle schoolers with local data and information on relevant topics like athletic concussions and agriculture.

These lessons are built on NGSS principles and put learning in the students’ hands with hands-on activities for groups and individuals. Kids will have ample opportunity to get curious, generate questions and lead themselves to answers.

Real Iowans and how they intersect with history around the world.  A community that no longer exists - Buxton, IA; sisters who exchanged pen pal letters with Anne and Margot Frank during WWII; Iowa's own "Rosa Parks" sits at a counter in Des Moines; Five Waterloo, IA brothers changed how the military assigns family in combat are just some of he stories of Iowa families.  Stories that make Iowa history.  In this two part course, you will be exploring these stories and sharing a story from your own family.
