Media Literacy Challenge: Writing Your Own Argument

This lesson will challenge learners to critically read and evaluate news articles presenting different positions on a single issue that the learner takes interest in. The learner will then be challenged to formulate their own opinion by refining their own argument on the issue. The target audience of learners for this lesson constitute the Career and College Readiness Standards Grade Level E (9-12) in their reading and writing abilities. Learners will hone practical skills by engaging in this lesson, such as how to critically engage with news and media, being able to succinctly summarize larger pieces of information, and using information to write a structured argument based on their own opinions. These skills will have practical applications for everyday life, reading and writing the GED, and when applying for jobs that require information processing.

Media Literacy Symposium

Staff at Avanti HS in Olympia, WA, organized and full-day media literacy symposium for their students. They invited community members to present on various aspects of media and communications. Students signed up for 45-minute sessions throughout the day. At the end of the day, students gathered in their advisory classes to debrief and share highlights.The project was part of the Digital Immersion Initiative 2.0 in the Olympia School District and funded in part by a Digital Citizenship and Media Literacy from the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.The materials provided here were posted with the permission of the AHS staff members who created them.

This guide walks you through the resources available from the News Literacy Project, including the Checkology virtual classroom, which is mainly for grades 6-12. Students can move at their own pace through a wide variety of lessons that mostly focus on journalism and news literacy, but also cover misinformation, conspiracy theories, and other relevant topics.The lessons include videos of journalists and other experts, plus visually engaging interactive activities. Other resources are also described.

This lesson invites students to use multiple forms of media, including their own Instagram accounts, to explore their on-line identities.  The lesson culminates in a personal, visual essay.  In the essay, students will use their own images as evidence. Then, students will reason about that evidence to compare what they see on their Instagram posts to their “real world” self. Using information from resources explored in class, students will include a discussion of “authenticity” and properly weave in quotes from those resources.
